Cinnaminson Library Presents Camden Documentary Tonight
'Poet of Poverty' explores poverty and other social issues in Camden.

A free screening of Poet of Poverty, a documentary film based on the letters of longtime Camden priest Father Michael Doyle, will be shown tonight at the Cinnaminson Library.
In the film narrated by actor Martin Sheen, Doyle argues that Camden has, over time, become home to sewage, trash, and scrap metal processing facilities, used as a dumping ground by the surrounding suburban communities.
After the showing, which runs from 7 to 8 p.m., a discussion based on the historical, cultural, and ethical themes and questions raised by the film will follow, facilitated by Mark Krasovic, assistant research professor of American studies at Rutgers-Newark.
The film is made by Sean Dougherty, Tana Ross and Freke Vuijst.
This event is presented by the New Jersey Council for the Humanities.

i spent two years installing cable in Camden in the early 90s. i was amazed by the number of good, hard working people that seem to always get lumped in with the thugs and drug dealers.
i entered one house that was beautiful inside. the kids were doing sat morning chores and mom was on top of those kids like a drill sergeant. impressed, i asked the woman why the outside looked run down while the interior looked like a showplace. she replied, they didn't want to draw attention to themselves as well to do.
imho, Camden can be saved, but it's going to take manufacturing jobs to do it.
