High School SAT Scores Rise for the Class of 2012
Students scored nearly 70 points higher than the previous graduating class.
Cinnaminson High School students in 2012 scored more than 20 points higher on their SATs in each of the three parts of the test than the class of 2011.
At Wednesday's board of education meeting, SAT scores were revealed for the last two graduating classes.
In 2011, CHS students scored an average of 492 on the critical reading section, 502 on the math section and 484 on the writing section. That's a total of 1,478.
The national average in 2011 was 1,500. The state average was 1,508.
A perfect score on the SATs is a 2,400.
For 2012, students scored 68 points higher on the SAT overall. The high school average in critical reading is 513, in math it's 523 and in writing, it's 510. That's a total of 1,546.
The national average for 2012 is 1,498—two points lower than 2011. The state average is 1,511—three points higher than last year.
Superintendent Salvatore Illuzzi calls the improvement a "significant leap."

I am glad the scores are up this year; but, I do not understand when considering the high cost of running the school districts reflected in my property tax bill does not bring about scores that are far even higher. Significant in my book would be scores far exceeding the just around average scores while mediocre or average is not.

HI Ric according to the state, Cinnaminson receives nearly 25% of it's school budget revenue via state aid which despite your high tax bill allows it to be just a little lower. Doesn't this mean someone else is paying a little for you?

No. I pay taxes to the county and state like everyone else. How many names at patch do you use?

How do you feel about towns say a Haddonfield that gets little or zero back? They pay the state and county too right?

@E Warren et al. Your link shows that Haddonfield got $846,128 in state aid for its schools. You must be very wealthy if that is nothing to you.

Look at the amount of aid some of these districts are receiving. Are they all delivering better test scores or do we all just pay more for the heck of it?

SAT's are a scam. Most colleges don't even go by them, they usually use GPA's now. Good for these kids though, keep it up!

SAT's are not even necessary if you attend a community college for 2 years then transfer to a university. I think these days more people are going this route to keep students loans to a minimal, but congrats to the students that did well on their SAT.

Michelle, you are right to inform those thinking about attending a 2 yr. college and that they do not need to take the SAT'S for this route. To continue as a transfer student to a 4 year college the GPA required for the new school has to be met. Check the college to find out what it is and reach higher than the min. because many students are trying to get transferred in where there are only a few slots available for this kind of student status. Many kids don't know that. It is not a 'given'.

True. You can also receive scholarships for the 4 year college, if you have a high GPA in the community college.

Wow Ric couldn't you just congratulate the kids.
Congratulations kids!! Great job.

@Sarah. I said I was glad scores were up.
But that does not alter the fact that with all the money the schools get from property owners that the scores should be much better. The school administrators as well as teachers are not doing their best. I cannot congratulate either group for giving students a mediocre education. Sal should not be content with a few points up. He needs to focus on improving the teaching.
You know, it was up until recently that when Cinnaminson’s schools were among the better schools in the state.

Ric, Do enlighten us. How, from this article about SAT scores going up, can you make the claim that our teachers are giving our students a "mediocre" education? Are you a product of Cinnaminson schools?
Ric

@Maury. Uhh, the SAT scores at Cinnaminson were essentially average. Just being around average might be outstanding to some people (mainly the teachers and administrators) but it really is mediocre – check your dictionary. But listen, you are free to disagree with me all you want. But I think your effort would be better spent urging the schools to improve. It is not like we do not give the schools more than enough money to provide the students with a good education. Now it is turn of the schools to preform well.

DOUBLER
Ric you have to question the validity of those numbers. It's hard to imgine that Haddon Twp received 7 mil+ more than Haddonfield , maybe it was missing a coma and it's 8mil not 500k. Anyhow, they're doing fine everything anymore is so geared around 'test' all the Twps now spend time worrying about the Ask test and kids get so worked up etc. the higher education is a whole charade the prices of these higher education institutions keeps going up faster than medical spending and they have these kids so far in debt with very little jobs to apply for when they come out. Most of these kids are learning what they need so know you can settle down until the next issue comes up.

Remember though, unlike other townships in the area, Cinnaminson does not discourage any kid from taking it. Some of our other neighboring towns do which is why they "seem" to have higher scores.

I have just seen a flyer from School:
1) CHS was ranked#2 High School in Burlington County and #8 in all of South Jersey by NewJersey Monthly using criteria such as Average Combined SAT scores, %students Advanced Proficient HSPA—Lang. Arts and Math.,
2) The school district was evaluated by a NJDept. of Education/County Team in the areas of: Instruction, Fiscal Management,Operations, Personnel and Governance and has been recognized a “High PerformingDistrict.”
3) The school was in the top 3rd best performing in the whole state.
Doesn't seem that mediocre to me. Well done everyone involved (except Ric)
