Life Scout Louie DeLuca Fixes Covenant Church Parking Lot

The CHS junior repaired cracks and repainted.

Boy Scout Troop 70 have several Scouts who have or will achieve Eagle Scout rank. Cinnaminson Patch has asked them to share their stories and photos with us.

Scout: Louie DeLuca

Current Scout Rank: Life Scout

School: Cinnaminson High School

Grade: 11

Project: For my Eagle Scout project, I repaired the parking lot at Covenant Presbyterian Church. The parking lot is broken up into two sections with approximately 120 parking spaces. There are also two 470-foot long driveways that needed to be repaired.

The parking lots and driveways were littered with many cracks that were several inches deep and had weeds sprouting from them. The parking spaces needed to be repainted as well as the curb along the perimeter of the church.

The first step of my project was to raise donation funds and obtain any necessary materials. After this, I began my work by removing the weeds from both parking lots and the driveways. I also applied weed killer on the cracks.  This process took several weeks because there were so many cracks.

After the weeding was completed, I began the task of filling the cracks and potholes. To complete this job, I used asphalt patch, liquid crackfiller and caulk crackfiller. This was probably the most difficult part of the project because the cracks were extremely deep and needed to be refilled a couple times.

My last step was to repaint the curb and parking lot lines. We used a paint walker to paint the parking spaces and striping paint to make the curb more noticeable.

When the job was completed, I was very pleased with the results. The parking lot desperately needed to be fixed and the finished product can be appreciated by many people since it is used by several groups and organizations in addition to the members of Covenant Presbyterian Church. Without these repairs, the parking lot would have needed to be completely repaved in the near future.

I am very thankful for all the assistance my friends, family, adult leaders and fellow Scouts have provided in helping me finish my project. I would also like to give a special thanks to Home Depot of Delran, Sherwin Williams in Cinnaminson, and Triboro Paving in Cinnaminson for their generous donations of material goods and tools.  My project was completed on 10-28-12.

Bravo Lou for completing a very difficult and labor intense Eagle Scout project. It was an interesting site to watch all of the participants on their hands and knees scraping and patching the many cracks and crevices of the lot under Lou's calm leadership and direction. Troop 70 in Cinnaminson is helping to develop the youth of today to be the leaders of the future. Lou Deluca will be one of those leaders.
