Senior Citizens Sought for Advisory Committee

Township committee approved the senior citizens' ad hoc group at Monday's special meeting.

Township committee Monday night voted to form a senior citizens' advisory committee, a group of seven members who will work with Committeewoman Kathy Fitzpatrick and township committee members on issues.

Advisory committee members—including a chairperson—will be appointed at the township’s reorganization meeting the first week of January 2013.

“This is an advisory committee composed of senior residents over 55 that will meet on a monthly basis in an official capacity where they will be able to discuss issues relevant or of concern to our senior residents,” said Deputy Mayor Anthony Minniti, whose idea it was to start the ad hoc committee.

Fitzpatrick will serve as the liaison between the senior citizens’ group and township committee as she is the director of health and senior services.

Minniti said the committee would operate much like the other ad hoc committees in the township, such as the parks and recreation department. Parks and recreation meetings are held monthly with the committee and Mayor Don Brauckmann, who also serves as the director of parks and rec.

There, recommendations are made and Brauckmann brings those recommendations back to the township committee. Members of the public are invited to attend just as they would with the senior citizens’ advisory committee.

Minniti said several senior citizens have already contacted the township for possible involvement in the group. Any seniors who want more information about the advisory committee can contact township clerk Pam McCartney at pmccartney@cinnaminsonnj.org or at the township building, 856-829-6000.

Hi John, sorry but I have not commented simply because I wanted to deny the flamers a chance to meaninglessly shout. What will this board to accomplish? Will it be limited to finding places to install bocce ball courts? It will be tightly controlled by the committee so it seems it has little room to accomplish anything which would be against the township’s wishes.
I wish it would work on substitutive problems like tackling the property tax for seniors.
1. From each home the township collects around $5000 in school taxes.
2. Since it cost Cinnaminson $14,463 to educate a student, for a typical family of 3 kids would cost $43,389.
3. So the township would save $43,389 if a home was owned by a typical senior that has no children. The township should offer an incentive to encourage seniors to own single homes in Cinnaminson. The best incentive to encourage more home ownership by seniors is to offer them a generous break on property taxes. This incentive would not only encourage area senior to buy into Cinnaminson, the added demand on buying houses would also help our home prices rise. (And raise assessed values for the tax collector.)
It is a win-win for everyone. We wouldn’t even need to build a new high school just because the superintendent thinks somehow CHS will gain a 100 more students. (God only knows where they will live. There is very little land left to build upon except on top of the dump.)

Oh boy, our houses are over assessed now, prices will not go up but our tax rates sure will, and when they start with the scofflaws for fines on code infractions we will be in trouble again....oh well happy holidays...

Hi John, I sure wish my home was still worth $400k like it was a seven years ago. It seems strange that housing values only go down. When I was a kid, my parents owned a bunch of houses which they rented out. The rents gave them a nice profit but the big payoff was in selling them - you could count on inflation back then. Happy holidays to you too.

@Ric, I am surprised at all the people that write are not writing about this stuff....they write about Barons gas station, the car wash behind sunoco, the deli and the new 611 in riverton but nothing about senior's...they also say that we need schools and that would bring in people, I just happened to be chatting with the dept of public works and they say that there are alot of vacant houses that are not kept up, I have one next door thats bank owned and the leaves are all over the place and a tree fell on the house but no one cares.....guess thats the scofflaws oh well...

Why have a group of people that can do nothing to help with anything in the township
Talk and discussion groups are good for schools....people in power have to do something besides gather information and let it sit on there desk.....getting in new businesses will help with the tax base but how much will it help the homeowner who is paying over the market price of there home now with assessments out of wack....oh well have a good one....
