AMC Renews 'Comic Book Men' for Second Season

Any details about possible changes remain sparse, but the show, filmed at Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash, is coming back.

Everyone's favorite Red Bank-based comic book reality television show, Comic Book Men, is coming back for a second season, AMC recently announced. Walt Flanagan, manager of Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash, and one-fourth of the star power behind the reality show, confirmed Wednesday evening at the comic shop that the Kevin Smith-developed show is coming back, but that he's unaware of any finer details AMC has planned. The shop, where the reality TV show is filmed, is located in downtown Red Bank, Monmouth County.  Comic Book Men's first season consisted of six one-hour episodes that revolved around the shop and the exploits of real friends and (sometime) employees of the Stash: Walt Flanagan, Bryan Johnson, Ming Chen and Mike Zapcic. …

Footlighters Will Close Out Season with 'Trailer Park'

The eccentric comedy focuses on the lives of seven people in a Florida trailer park.

The trailer park stops in Cinnaminson starting this weekend as Footlighters closes out its current season with an off-Broadway underground, but popular, play. The Great American Trailer Park Musical, a story about seven eccentric characters—including an agoraphobic, Dr. Phil-loving, exotic dancer—in a Florida trailer park, will run each weekend from now until May 19. “It’s become sort of a cult musical in the theater world,” said Dennis Dougherty, president of the board of directors at Footlighters. “It’s very sort of quirky character driven.” The mainstage season at Footlighters runs from September until May until the Intern Company takes over for the summer months. Tickets are still available for each night including opening weekend, but…

This is a very funny show! Lots of adult themes and language but you would expect that given the trailer park setting of the show. Very talented actors and actresses. A fabulous set. I enjoyed it very much and look forward to their next season's shows.   more ›

Report: Christie Snoozed During Springsteen Show

The governor apparently nodded off during a Bruce Springsteen concert in New York City.

Bruce Springsteen's high-energy shows are known to inspire fervor in his audiences.  But, apparenty Gov. Christopher J. Christie was running a little low on energy at a recent concert by The Boss at Madison Square Garden in New York City, according to a report on The Huffington Post.   A fan sent in a photo of Christie resting his head in his hand, apparently napping during the show, the New York Post reports.  The governor is a longtime fan of The Boss. Last month Christie attended what he said was his 127th Springsteen concert, at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.  Christie's name has been tossed around as a potential running mate for Mitt Romney in next year's presidential election. Last year, Christie mulled his own presidential …

Rock for Hope: Can Music Save This Man?

Money raised at the benefit concert will help Burlington County's Tim O'Connell, who faces a debilitating intestinal illness.

“Most days, getting up in the morning feels like punishment,” Tim O’Connell, 45, says frankly. For the past five years, O’Connell has been living with a painful intestinal disease called gastroparesis. The majority of his calories come through a tube, which is slowly killing his liver. Because the illness affects his entire digestive tract, even a radical treatment like intestinal transplant is not guaranteed to help. He knows because he’s spent a month at the Mayo Clinic for observation. “I’m kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place,” O’Connell, of Marlton, says—a fitting metaphor for the former Colorado police office and state park worker who was an avid climber before his disease took hold.  “In either case, it’s not a great …

Local Women's Choir Performs at 'Super Bowl of Concert Halls'

The Holy Cross High School Women's Ensemble took the stage at Carnegie Hall earlier this month.

Everyone knows the joke about how you get to Carnegie Hall. But not counting a seat in the crowd, very, very few actually make it there. So when 15 girls from the Holy Cross High School Women’s Ensemble had the chance to take the stage at the venerable concert hall, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. “It’s like the Super Bowl of concert halls,” said choir director Ray Bonnette. “To go and sing at Carnegie Hall is one of the biggest deals in music.” Bonnette’s girls earned the chance to perform at Carnegie—alongside several other high school choirs from California, Florida, Utah and Wisconsin, to name a few—after a winning performance at the WorldStrides Heritage festival in Philadelphia last year, which is all the more impressive when…

Reality TV Meets Repossession

Battling pit bulls and baseball bat-wielding men, "Repo Games" co-host Josh Lewis dishes on filming the reality show in South Jersey.

A few local South Jersey residents will have their 15 minutes of reality TV fame in upcoming weeks—although some probably wish the outcome was a bit different. Last fall, Spike TV brought its reality series, Repo Games, to New Jersey for the first time. The show filmed a number of episodes locally, including in Gloucester Township, Wenonah and Paulsboro.  Repo Games, a mix of game show and reality TV, is perhaps an inevitable sign of the times: entertainment and the economy wrapped into one program. Co-hosts Josh Lewis and Tom DeTone travel to different areas of the country and go to homes of people who are in danger of having their vehicles repossessed. The hosts play a trivia game with the car owners. Answer at least three out of five …

Be Sure to Come, Be Our Guest

Cinnaminson High School wil present Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" this weekend.

Not only will the Beast be rumbling out a roar this weekend, but residents in the neighborhood will no doubt be hearing thunderous applause, when Cinnaminson High School performs this spring’s musical, Beauty and the Beast. Last weekend began with the tedious work of tech week, as cast and crew members rehearsed the musical, and all the technical elements were checked into place. But from the looks of it, this Walt Disney classic will be staging a new sophistication, without sacrificing any of the delight, when audiences see the play this coming weekend. “This show is by far one of the more challenging plays that we’ve put on here,” Sean Wilson said, who is a drama club adviser, and has been handling the majority of the backstage details …

Is the Best Young Singer in America from New Jersey?

Three singers who grew up in the Garden State are among the finalists on 'The Voice' and 'American Idol.'

Is the best young singer in the nation from New Jersey? Three Garden State natives are among the finalists competing nationally on two separate singing competitions, NBC's The Voice and Fox's American Idol. Former Kinnelon resident Elise Testone came close to elimination Thursday night on American Idol, finishing in the bottom two slots when all of the votes from viewers of the program were tallied. But the three Idol judges, singers Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler and music producer Randy Jackson, decided to keep her on the show and send fellow contestant Jeremy Rosado home. Testone is a 2001 graduate of Kinnelon High School who went to college in North Carolina and remained there after graduation. Although she's been forbidden from …

Did South Jersey’s 'American Idol' Make It Through?

Pine Hill’s Jermaine Jones is vying for ‘American Idol.’ Was his Stevie Wonder song enough to put him in the top 12?

Pine Hill native Jermaine Jones heard those three words every American Idol contestant hopes to hear: You are safe. Jones made it through the elimination round Thursday, although he had a scare, ending up in the bottom four. The velvet-voiced Jones, 25, sang Stevie Wonder’s “Knocks Me Off My Feet” this week, but one judge stayed firmly on his feet. Randy Jackson told Jones, “I loved the verses but, when you hit the chorus I did not enjoy it.” Steven Tyler was more effusive, telling Jones, “That song fits you like an Armani suit. It was perfect.” It’s already been a wild Idol ride for Jones, who was cut earlier, but invited back to participate in the semifinals for the male singers. With two scares already, do you think the 6-foot-8 “gentle…

The Astonishing Adventures of Alice

The middle school will showcase "Alice in Wonderland Jr." this weekend.

For nearly three months now, a young girl named Alice has been fiddling with keyholes, rapping with Caterpillar and beating the Queen of Hearts at her own game. That’s because a plucky group of adolescents has been readying for the debut of their production of Disney's Alice in Wonderland Jr. On Tuesday evening, an ensemble of 50 students from the middle school belted out show tunes during another one of their dress rehearsals in preparation for their opening night on Friday. With a vivid kaleidoscope of colors artfully portrayed on backdrops around the stage, Alice journeyed through Wonderland, engaging with popular, and peculiar, characters in her search for White Rabbit. The classic novel was written in 1865 by British author Charles …
