Burlington County submitted the following news release: Burlington County County Clerk Tim Tyler announced the Clerk’s Office has completed its initial mailing of primary election ballots. Any ballot requested for the June 4 Primary Election before April 25 should be received in the coming days. “My office began issuing ballots on Friday, April 19, starting with Military and Overseas UOCAVA voters. Civilian ballot mailing also began the same day,” said Tyler. The last ballots of the initial 1,858 ballot mailing was delivered to the post office Friday afternoon. “If a voter does not receive an expected ballot, they should call the clerk’s office as soon as possible,” said Tyler. “We are able to check their application status and have many…

Matthew Paterno, the Democratic candidate for Cinnaminson Township Committee, vows to do more than just smile for the cameras if elected.
To the editor: This opportunity to run for township committee is not to be taken lightly. There's absolutely no getting around the fact that the coming months will be intense, or that I'm slated against an opponent who's clearly and deservedly amassed a following in our great community. I admire that enormously. For right now, and until June's primary, provided our citizens are kind enough to give me the official nod on the summer ballot, my objective is simple: Listen, observe, and continuously revise my plan of action with methodic intent for issues that townspeople come to their candidates with. I've already begun meeting with civic groups and getting a clear idea as to where some of their concerns lie. Once the summer months come, I'll…

Democrat Matthew Paterno, 25, says he's looking forward to election season as he vies for Cinnaminson Committeewoman Kathy Fitzpatrick's open seat.
Modern-day politics might seem rife with divisiveness, but township committee candidate Matthew Paterno says the keyword of his campaign is unity. Democrat Paterno will vie for Committeewoman Kathy Fitzpatrick’s open seat this fall, while Fitzpatrick will seek a third term on committee. At just 25 years old, this is Paterno’s first bid for public office. He does, however, have a fairly extensive political background, including involvement in various campaigns—for example, Burlington City Mayor Jim Fazzone’s 2011 campaign—and is active in student government at Rutgers Camden, where he is currently attending. Paterno—who is interning at Merrill Lynch and hopes to continue a career there after he graduates this year—was elected to the …

Committeewoman Kathy Fitzpatrick will seek a third term, and will have to fend off a challenge from Democratic candidate Matthew Paterno to keep her seat.
Township Committeewoman Kathy Fitzpatrick will seek a third term on committee, defending her seat against a challenge from Democrat Matthew Paterno. Fitzpatrick, who served as mayor for part of her second term (only the fourth female mayor in township history), filed a petition with the township clerk to once again run for committee. The deadline for candidates was this past Monday. She said her goals for a third term are fairly simple—and really no different from her goals during her entire tenure. "Now, really my goal is to just serve the residents," she said. "I can be a conduit to help people who may not have somewhere to turn." Fitzpatrick follows in the footsteps of her father, who served on Maple Shade Township Council for 16 years…

Gov. Chris Christie is the best person to lead New Jersey over the next four years, according to voters polled in a survey released this week by Quinnipiac University. Christie, a Republican, leads his Democratic rival, state Sen. Barbara Buono (D-Middlesex), 62 percent to 25 percent in the state's 2013 gubernatorial race, according to the poll. The governor's overall approval rating also remains high. Christie's 74 percent approval rating and 69 percent favorable rating tie his personal record highs from January, the Huffington Post reports, both numbers buoyed by public perception of the way he handled Hurricane Sandy's impact and its aftermath. Christie appears to have strong support on the other side of the aisle, as well. In the …

Chris Christie will seek a second term as New Jersey governor, he announced Monday.
Gov. Chris Christie will run for re-election for New Jersey governor's seat, he confirmed Monday. Christie made the announcement during an appearance at a press conference at the Port Monmouth Fire Department in Middletown Monday afternoon. The governor declined to talk in detail about his bid, saying he is saving that for a more formal announcement in January. But he did say he sought the advice of his wife, Mary Pat, and four children during the Thanksgiving Day weekend, and got their blessing. "I have a job to finish that I would have never anticipated to have six weeks ago," said Christie, adding that he loves the Garden State. "I want to leave it better than I found it when I'm done." The gubernatorial election will take place in …

Committeeman-elect John McCarthy is developing plans for his first political position, and wants to hear from residents about their ideas and concerns.
Cinnaminson Township Committee’s just-elected member, John McCarthy, may be new to the political scene, but that doesn't mean he isn't already fully prepped to get the job done. McCarthy won an uncontested race on Tuesday for an open seat on the township committee. He'll assume the position at the committee's reorganization meeting in January. McCarthy, 54, has never held a position in public office. In fact, up until now, he’d never even run for one. Earlier this year, the Republican committee in town approached McCarthy and asked him to consider running for the open seat. “I decided it was a very worthwhile endeavor,” McCarthy said. “Giving back to the community is something I’ve always done, and this is another way to accomplish that…

Brauckmann is the current mayor while McCarthy is a political newcomer.
In the uncontested township committee race, current Mayor Don Brauckmann retained his seat and newcomer John McCarthy will be a new face on the dais. Current Committeeman John Rooney did not seek another term. According to unofficial election results, Brauckmann nabbed 4,951 votes while McCarthy received 4,947. The winners did not return calls for comment by presstime. Cinnaminson Township is a committee-based government, which means residents vote for five committee members and those members appoint a mayor each year. McCarthy and Brauckmann ran unopposed in the election—an odd happening for a presidential year. Last year, Committeemen Ben Young and Anthony Minniti ran against three Independent candidates. No Democrats ran last year …
Voters in New Jersey on Tuesday cast their ballot for Barack Obama, giving him the state's 14 electoral votes.
Barack Obama won New Jersey’s 14 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican Mitt Romney. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race 3 out of 5 times. Romney and Obama did not campaign aggressively in New Jersey. The state has typically been a Democratic stronghold in recent presidential elections.
President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.
Update: This article was updated at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 7 with quotes from Gov. Chris Christie. President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." "The task of perfecting our union moves forward. It moves forward because of you," Obama told supporters in his acceptance speech shortly after 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. "It moves forward because you reaffirmed the spirit that has triumphed over war and depression. The spirit that has lifted …
