Cinnaminson Talent is Showcased in SEXY SADIE BEATLES concert at Wood Park

With Michael Baratta

Al Melone, a Cinnaminson resident since 1991, is a key member of Sexy Sadie, a Beatles tribute band as unique as their name, and the attraction at the tonight's July 25th FREE concert at 7 p.m. at Wood Park, in Cinnaminson.

Of all the things that set Sexy Sadie apart from other Beatle cover bands, first and foremost is their name. The causal Beatles fan, or any classic rock-era listener, may not have a clue what Sexy Sadie is. Well, according to Melone – that’s the point.

“We thought long and hard about a band name,” says Melone. “With so many Beatle acts across the country, we wanted something that would set us apart. Only hardcore Beatles fans will know that particular song.” Because of the obscure title, Melone continues, saying, “Folks come out to a show expecting to see something different than four guys playing Beatles songs.”

The band considers their shows a “celebration” of Beatles music, not an “imitation.” They are not a “dress up” Beatles band. There are no wigs or costumes. The members strive to perform faithful recreations of the Beatles records. There is no one “playing” John, Paul, George, or Ringo. In fact, the members frequently switch vocal parts (even mid-song) to get the best sound possible to recreate the music of the Beatles. On top of that, whenever possible, Sexy Sadie uses period-correct instruments and amplifiers to get the sounds just right – making songs easily recognizable.

Sexy Sadie truly is a Beatles celebration band. They only play songs that the Beatles wrote as a group. They believe, like so many, their sum was far greater than the individual talents. Because of this, Melone states, Sexy Sadie does not play any of the members’ solo work. But listeners won’t be disappointed, as the band taps the whole catalogue of Beatle recordings, covering the earliest “Beatlemania” period all the way through the last Beatles hits.

Many songs that were never performed live by the Beatles are in their set, including selections from Revolver, the White album, and Rubber Soul. Each night the set varies as the band mixes well-know works with some never-before-seen-live deep tracks Beatles fans love.

“Whether you’re a hardcore Beatles fan or a casual listener, witnessing Sexy Sadie perform live is an opportunity you won’t want to miss,” says Cinnaminson Parks and Recreation member and township councilman Don Brauckmann. The band plays Philly and South Jersey venues throughout the year. They have several major festivals upcoming this summer, including the Cinnaminson Summer Concert Series on July 25 at 7 p.m. at Wood Park, at the corner of Riverton and Pomona Roads, Cinnaminson, NJ 08077.
