First South Jersey Krispy Kreme Sets Opening Date

The Collingswood doughnut shop will be the first suburban branch of the chain in the Delaware Valley.

People waiting for the first illumination of the “Hot Doughnuts Now” sign at Collingswood’s upcoming Krispy Kreme have just a few more months to wait.

The store’s projected opening is set for late August, owner Brian Zaslow told Patch this week. Collingswood’s Krispy Kreme is the first to open in the Delaware Valley. It will join two Philadelphia locations that opened recently.

Workers currently are gutting the future , located at the intersection of Haddon Avenue and Cuthbert Boulevard on the borough’s border with Haddon Township. In recent weeks, the building’s exterior color changed from its red-and-white Kentucky Fried Chicken motif to the browns of Krispy Kreme.

A Dumpster outside the building has quickly filled up as workers gut the interior for renovations. The shell of the building will be preserved—including the drive-through window—but with landscaping and signage improvements outside, Zaslow said.

“We’re transforming it into a brand-spanking-new Krispy Kreme,” Zaslow said. “We’re bringing in lots of new equipment, building a soft seating area with a TV and Wi-Fi.”

The store also will include a viewing window where customers can watch employees make and glaze the doughnuts.

Although no official day in August has been nailed down, preparations for the grand opening are taking shape.

“We’ll have lots of grand opening hoopla,” Zaslow promised. “There will be prizes for the first group of people.”

Zaslow and his team also are making plans to hire a staff. He estimates there will be 40 open positions for full- and part-time workers. The store will begin accepting applications in late June or early July, he said.

“This is a great community and a great family-oriented town,” Zaslow said of selecting Collingswood for a Krispy Kreme. “There is a great business community as well, with a vibrant restaurant and retail scene. … We’re excited to be part of that.”
