Healthy Fare Served up in New Riverton Restaurant

"Crazy"—that's the word Cathy Gunn uses to describe the anticipation of Riverton locals as she prepared to open her new business.

After a three-year hiatus, Gunn, a 20-year catering veteran, opened the doors Saturday on her new Cathy’s Catering eatery on Main Street in Riverton.

As she scrambled to complete her last-minute preparations before opening day, Gunn said she looked forward to her new business.

“Everybody’s pretty excited,” Gunn said. “I hope they show up.” 

The part-time bus driver decided it was time to open a new catering business after closing the doors to her old establishment in Palmyra three years ago. She believes that a healthier, “nothing fried” menu will attract new business as well as bring back her old business.

“This is a real favorite,” she said pointing at a menu. “The chunky chicken pita. I’ve already had calls saying, ‘Can I please come and get my chunky chicken pita?’”

Gunn described the local anticipation and curiosity over the new corner luncheonette as “crazy,” and that the little brick shop across the railroad tracks is already gaining local attention.

“I have gotten five to six calls a day asking if they can fax their orders,” she said.

Despite her jam-packed schedule ahead of the opening, Gunn said she is eager to get the business going, and said her old clientele will be lined up as soon as she opens her doors.

“I realized I miss the people and missed that whole—I mean we had a lot of regulars that I’m sure are all going to be back in the door,” she said.

Gunn opted out of the grandeur of a typical grand opening and instead opted for balloons tied to the railings to herald her return. She just wanted to get the ball rolling.

“We’re just opening,” she said. “We’ll have everybody’s favorites.”
