Toppled Trees and Shrubs Often Provide More Bark than Bite to a Homeowner’s Wallet

A frequently asked question from many a homeowner, "If my neighbor's tree falls on my home, who is responsible?"

A frequently asked question from many a homeowner, “If my neighbor’s tree falls on my home, who is responsible?”

“It doesn’t matter whether a tree was actually growing on your property,"
says Charles D. Horta of Cinnaminson. "If it lands on your home, you should
call your insurance company. After a windstorm in particular, trees, shrubs and
branches can become projectiles capable of traveling significant distances.”

While at first glance tree damage may not seem to be the first potential danger that comes to mind for many homeowners, fallen trees and shrubs actually are common homeowners insurance claims. As a rule, standard homeowners insurance policies cover damage the tree does to the insured structures and the contents within them. This includes trees felled by a windstorm, hail, weight of ice, snow or sleet.

If a tree hits an insured structure, there is also coverage for the cost of
removing the tree, depending on the type of policy purchased. If the fallen
tree did not hit an insured structure, there is generally no coverage for
debris removal; however, you may be able to purchase this coverage separately
depending on your insurer.

For those worried about their vehicles, cars damaged or destroyed by falling
trees are covered under the comprehensive portion of an auto insurance policy.

“If you find yourself in a situation where tree damage has occurred to your property, the important thing to remember is to first contact your insurance provider, says Horta.  “That way, we can get the recovery and repair process started faster and more efficiently on your behalf.”
