Rain Rain Go Away!!!

The Turtle Lady talks about the most recent flooding of the Pompeston Creek

I thought I was done writing about rain and flooding and watching the creek bank wash away! My post about the current renovation work going on at my home was almost finished, when...WHAM! The unrelenting rain is back, the skies have been gray for days, and I'm not sure if we'll ever have low tide again. It's about 8:30PM on Thursday as I write this - low tide was supposed to be around 6:30, but the water level never got much below where a normal high tide peaks. Tonight's high tide at 11:45 is going to be an absolute horror. I tried to get some photos in the dark the other night, but the strobe feature on the camera requires a much steadier hand than mine. I'm posting some of the shaky pix anyway, along with the shots I got this morning.
Once again, we had to lower the water level in our swimming pool to keep it from overflowing, and I had to bail out the turtle ponds to make sure the beasties didn't float away. The tortoises finally came out of hiding today, but they weren't real happy about it, and all three of the African tortoises went to bed early. The box turtles don't seem to mind the rain at all, and stay out in it all day, and a good part of the night. The heavy rain makes the nightcrawlers come out of hiding after dark, and the box turtles have been eating as many of them as they possible can.
According to the rain gauge in my weather station, we've gotten more than 10 inches of rain since the day before Hurricane Irene arrived. That's alot of rain to get over a couple of months! In a matter of two weeks, it's a nightmare.
The silver lining to the perpetual rain cloud is that my new office is almost done! A couple of years ago, we finished our basement and I had my office down there. Less than a year after I moved into my new space, we got hit with a major flooding event. We managed to recover from that flood, and then we got hit with the flooding in April, and then Irene, and now this week's rain from Lee. Needless to say, my basement office (or "hobbit hole" as my kids called it) is no longer a place I want to be. With my need for a home office space increasing due to my position as president of the PCWA, we decided to finally renovate the room at the back of the house that had been the original kitchen. Check out my next blog post for a tale of history and home improvement - and as little mention of weather and rain as I can manage!
