Abandoned Gas Station Update, Street Dedication on Committee's Plate

Also, find out what the township would like to do with the pedestrian overpass at Riverton Road.

For those who couldn’t make it to this week’s township committee meeting, there were a few interesting items that didn’t make it into a full story, but were nonetheless noteworthy. Here are a few leftover tidbits from the meeting:

  • Business administrator Frank Locantore addressed the delay in the demolition of the gas station at Route 130 and Willow Drive. He acknowledged the building was supposed to have come down weeks ago and said he recently received an email from the contractor, claiming there were issues with the water shutoffs to the site. Locantore said he would reach out to American Water Company to "prod them along."
  • Deputy Mayor Anthony Minniti said he would like to see if the township could "create some kind of visual feature" on the pedestrian overpass at Riverton Road and Route 130—"either 'Welcome to Cinnaminson,' or something more creative," he suggested. Locantore said he had already reached to the state Department of Transportation to inquire if the township could do it.
  • The township plans to dedicate Bannard Street to the late Rev. Dr. Alvin Jackson, former pastor at Saint Paul Baptist Church. Jackson passed away in January and the new pastor, Victor Lee, thought renaming the street—on which the Baptist church is located—would be a fitting tribute to Jackson's 63 years of service. Mayor Ben Young called Jackson "a real dynamo," and said, "63 years is an institution." However, due to the number of businesses on Bannard Street, committee felt it was best to dedicate the street in Jackson's name rather than rename it. The township will reach out to the church to find out what its members would like, and—if they agree with committee's suggestion—public works will order signs to double-placard the street.

Township committee will hold its next meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 20, in the municipal building.
