Cinnaminson Pastor Calls Pope Resignation 'Courageous'

Rev. Peter R. Alindogan said it was a smart move for the ailing pope.

Pope Benedict XVI announced Monday morning he would resign at the end of this month citing health reasons, reports say, making him the first pontiff to do so in almost 600 years.

A local pastor is calling his move “courageous and smart.”

“It takes a lot of courage to do that,” said Rev. Peter James R. Alindogan, pastor of St. Charles Borromeo in Cinnaminson. “It’s a good model for priests and bishops alike who are trying to hold onto their positions—the pope is saying, ‘I know when it’s my time to go.’”

Benedict, 85, was elected in April 2005 upon John Paul II’s death earlier that same month. John Paul II publicly dealt with pneumonia and breathing problems in the months before his death.

“If John Paul II taught us how to die with all his agony,” Alindogan said, “this pope is teaching us how to live.”

Benedict made the announcement to Vatican cardinals during a meeting Monday.

"After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths due to an advanced age are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry," he told the cardinals. "I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only by words and deeds but no less with prayer and suffering.

"However, in today's world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the barque of St. Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary — strengths which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me."

The Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia, which includes Roman Catholic Churches in Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs, has announced last summer it will host the Vatican's 2015 World Meeting of Families. It is unknown if Benedict's successor will make an appearance.

Most. Rev. David M. O’Connell, the bishop of Trenton for the local diocese, said he feels sad about the announcement but sees “the courage and devotion of this great man.”

“In a world where power and influence are sought after and held tightly, this passing of the papal crozier speaks volumes about Pope Benedict XVI’s humility and desire that the Catholic Church be led effectively and well,” O’Connell added.

According to reports, the Vatican would hold a conclave to elect a new pope by mid-March.

The pope's resignation makes him human. It lessens all the mystery about the papacy down a notch which is very good. I don't think it takes courage to resign. I do agree with the bishop that it takes humility. Before God, the Pope is like us - we are not as important as we think we are. This is what the Catholic church hammers to the congregation every Sunday - Lord I am not worthy. Great Holy Father have a good rest and time for prayer in the Vatican Convent Cloister. You have hurt enough people in the days you were running the Doctrine of Faith (formerly called the Inquisition).

Here's hoping the church wises up and appoints someone progressive. We need a pope who isn't afraid to break with convention and modernize the church. If that should happen my family would be more than happy to return.

I agree with your comments Sarah. I want to love the church. The hierarchy just kills the spirit of God. Thank God local parish priests, sisters and laity keep it alive.

Sarah---what do you mean by progressive, break with convention, and modernize?

We were totally disappointed at the Palmyra Council Meeting last night. The ordinance requiring theRead More Inspection, Registration, and Licensing of Residential Rental Properties was opposed by many concerned citizens. Concerns were stated and questions asked, but few were answered or addressed! I still do not know if the NJ State code supercedes this ordinance, since no one addressed my concerns. The legality of this ordinance was questioned and it was mentioned that similar laws have been challenged in other towns and invalidated by the NJ courts. Why did the council not form a committee with those landlords that expressed a willingness to work together to come to an acceptable compromise and passage of an ordinance that is legal and for the good of all of Palmya?

I actually agree with most of what you say. If they face a court challenge and lose, they are dumberRead More than I thought. My point is that something has to be done. I feel that inaction is unacceptable. I literally have neighbors moving/trying to move because of 1 or 2 rental properties. Garbage on the lawn. Garbage in the street. Lawn only gets cut twice a year. Broken glass in the street. Multiple cars taking up space in front of homeowner's homes. Junk cars leaking oil in the streets. Broken porches, railings and windows. The drugs. The drugs. They should enforce current codes! The police should do their jobs. I hope that these new rules don't hurt innocent people, but some landlords have shown that they don't give a damn about the community that their "investments" are in.

I only wish that they would use the laws on the books. If 800 violations have been written sinceRead More April, then why do they need to pass this ordinance and have excessive fees and hurt me the small landlord who just spent over $7,000 fixing up my apartment. Palmyra has a large budget deficit, is this ordinance how the Council hopes to remedy the budget problem- $125. at a time?

This is great, we send our kids to school to read write and do math and yet when they have to putRead More things down for writing something for a college admissions we have to send them to professionals for help....So in esscence we are wasting our tax money and just providing teachers with a salary....No wonder the USA is in trouble...If its not on an I phone we cannot do it....Food for thought....
