County Hosts 'Sneaker Sundays' at Amico Island Park

Take a walk with Burlington County Freeholder Mary Ann O'Brien and take in nature this weekend.

Burlington County’s pro-parks program “Sneaker Sundays” returns this weekend with a trip to Amico Island Park in Delran at noon Sunday.

Freeholder Mary Ann O’Brien, an avid runner, a program aimed at drawing residents of all ages onto the Burlington County park trails for a casual Sunday stroll.

“Walking is good healthy exercise and Sneaker Sundays offer residents an opportunity to discover this family-friendly park,” she said. “A park ranger will offer some insight into the park and its natural inhabitants, making this an educational event as well.”

The walk will cover roughly two miles of trail at a pace that works for young and old alike.

Amico Island is a 55-acre peninsula surrounded by the Delaware River and Rancocas Creek. It includes visually striking river vistas, plenty of wildlife, and a diverse terrain perfect for hiking.

Walkers are encouraged to meet at noon at the information kiosk adjacent to the parking lot. No pre-registration is required and there are no fees.

After this week's walk, the next Sneaker Sunday will be on Sept. 9 at Pennington Park on Creek Road in Delanco. Pennington Park features an extensive trail network with plenty of observation piers and blinds, and several habitat types. It offers many recreational opportunities, including two dog parks, a public garden area, and picnicking spots in the central trailhead area.

The last scheduled Sneaker Sunday will be on Oct. 14 at Crystal Lake Park on Axe Factory Road in Mansfield. Crystal Lake is a very expansive park with a rugged feel that provides the perfect wilderness experience. It includes diverse wildlife and plant life, and features natural overlooks and ridges along the trail paths.
