Local Teens Enhance Leadership, Communication Skills
Several county teenagers are enjoying a summer camping experience highlighted by broader leadership skills, and a de-emphasis of technology, including text messaging and Facebook.

These kids are participants in the teen leadership training program at Mansfield Township’s Liberty Lake Day Camp. Already well-established, the program focuses specifically on those entering ninth and 10th grades.

The program curriculum was developed by members of Liberty Lake’s staff, based on extensive research into serious deficiencies many youngsters have related to socialization and expression capabilities.

This summer, about 130 young people—about 80 rising ninth graders, plus 50 10th graders—are engaged in Liberty Lake’s Teen Leadership training. The program requires an application and interview process, as Liberty Lake is only looking for those teenagers who are truly committed to learning about leadership. The program explores a different theme each week, and varying skills are focused on at daily workshops. In addition, those enrolled in the program also complete several community service projects.
