Day Tripper: Atsion Lake

A swim in the cedar water lake is the perfect way to beat the heat on a day trip just 50 minutes from Cinnaminson.

Sure, Jersey is renowned for our beaches and going down the shore is always an option when you need to cool off from the heat and humidity.

But don’t forget New Jersey’s many other options when you want to take a dip.

Atsion Lake is a shorter drive and, likely, a fraction of the cost of a shore trip. And, as an added bonus, the cedar water lake will do wonders for your hair.

Located in Wharton State Forest in Shamong, Atsion Lake offers daily swimming from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on a beach protected by lifeguards. Swimmers can enjoy a roped off area, with other areas of the lake open to kayaks and canoes.

The cool calmness of Atsion is an alternative to the crashing waves of the ocean. The cedar water is a different touch too. Insider’s tip: avoid white bathing suits, which may become discolored in the water. But, expect a soft head of hair after your swim. There’s just something in the cedar that makes your hair feel great.

Atsion’s recreational complex also offers a playground, barbecue areas, hiking trails, volleyball courts and a bathhouse.

Save money and bring a picnic lunch, or plan to cook on the grills—first come, first served. There is also a snack shack on-site.

There is a $5 per-car entrance fee on weekdays and $10 on weekends. Bikers and walk-ins must pay $2. The state park does limit the number of cars allowed in at a certain time, and weekends often reach capacity crowds. Call ahead to 609-268-0444 to check before you go.
