'Great Spectating Event' Returning to Riverton

The third annual Historic Riverton Criterium is just a few weeks away.

Mark your calendars now: One of Riverton's best spectating events returns in a few weeks, with the third annual Historic Riverton Criterium set for Sunday, June 9.

Organizer Carlos Rogers, a resident of the borough, said the criterium—a closed-course, high-speed bicycle race—has gotten bigger, and consequently, better, each year.

This year, Rogers is bringing in two food trucks—Cupcakes2GoGo and Mary's Mobile Meals—to help feed the hundreds of spectators expected for the event.

There'll also be live music from the Package Goods Orchestra, a children's race (for kids 8-10 years old), a bike raffle and more.

"I'm trying to make it as professional as possible," Rogers said, "so I can put out a good product for not only the riders, but also the spectators."

While Rogers originally launched the event as a way to support "grassroots bicycle racing," he said it's also a "great way to showcase the town."

If past attendance is any indication, roughly 200 riders are expected at this year's criterium. The race consists of a roughly 3/4-mile loop through the borough (see the attached map), with riders making between 35 to 50 laps, depending on what category they're registered for, explained Rogers, a cyclist himself.

"It's known as a very challenging and technically demanding course for the riders," he said.

Proceeds from this year's event will benefit the Riverton Fire Company. . Another $500 was donated to Riverton Police Officer Jeff Walker's Unity Tour campaign as well.

In addition to the proceeds from sponsorships and registrations, organizers will also be raising money by selling T-shirts and cowbells for spectators. Rogers said those who live along the race route are encouraged to throw parties to bring out more people.

"It's a great spectating event," he said.

Between race spectators, riders and those attending the event's other activities, Rogers is expecting more than 1,000 people.

The criterium will be held Sunday, June 9, beginning at 1 p.m.
