Irish Ladies: L.A.O.H. Division 4 Is Recruiting Members

Cinnaminson's A.O.H. Mike Doyle Division 4 may have some sisters soon.

Less than a year ago, Ancient Order of Hibernians Mike Doyle Division 4 came together on a hot August  right here in Cinnaminson. Since then, the division has grown in numbers and the group has participated in many local events and charities.

Mike Driscoll, dear friend of Mike Doyle and representative of Philadelphia’s Irish Society, as well as owner of Finnigan’s Wake in Philadelphia, spoke at last summer’s meeting and suggested an L.A.O.H. be established in Cinnaminson, in Mike Doyle’s honor.

This summer, Driscoll’s wish for a new ladies division may become a reality.

Palmyra resident and Cinnaminson business owner, Anne Caruso, hopes to have a charter for the L.A.O.H. Mike Doyle Division 4 by September or October.

“I was (am) very interested and proud of my Irish Catholic heritage," Caruso said. "I was directed to Bill Brennan and Bobby Tippin (A.O.H. Division 4 President and Vice President) and they asked me if I'd be willing to ‘get the ball rolling’ for an L.A.O.H. for the Mike Doyle Division. Of course I said yes.”

The Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians originated as the Daughters of Erin in Omaha, Neb. in 1894. In 1906, they changed their name to the Ladies Auxiliary to the Ancient Order of Hibernians in America. More recently, the group voted to change their name in 1984 to The Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. In 2004, the group incorporated on their own as the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, Inc.

Similar to the men’s group, the L.A.O.H. mission statement is: “While practicing Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity, we will work to strengthen our Roman Catholic Faith, our Country, and our Communities; and perpetuate the religion, history, culture and traditions of our Irish heritage.”

Caruso plans to create a group that is sensitive to the needs of women. She’s keeping in mind that many are working moms with time constraints and children to look after. She is hoping to recruit new members over the summer. Information regarding membership is posted on A.O.H. Division 4’s website.

Caruso is excited about this new endeavor and is working hard to get that ball rolling.

“This is something very near and dear to my heart," she said. "My grandmother was born in Ireland and I do this in her memory.”
