Memorial Park Playground to Get New Equipment

The old play structure was taken down to make way for a new one.

Some families got a surprise this past weekend when they tried to use ’s playground only to find an empty space of dirt and rocks.

A sign erected where the play structure and swing set once stood said the park is undergoing renovations.

The swing set was taken down for refurbishing and a brand new play structure will go up at the end of the summer.

But why do it in the middle of the season?

“It’s going to be an inconvenience at any time,” said Mayor Don Brauckmann, also the director of parks and recreation. “There’s never really a good time to do [it]. But there’s a higher volume of people in the parks in the spring and fall. And we can’t construct this in the winter.”

With organized sports at Memorial Park at its slowest during August, Brauckmann said the construction of the new play structure should be finished in September.

A play structure complete with four slides and two bridges has been in storage for a few years, said Brauckmann, waiting to be erected at the park. The mayor, who wasn’t on committee when the structure was purchased with capital funds, said the township wanted to wait to put it up when other construction would be going on.

And a few years ago, Brauckmann said the structure wasn’t in the shape it is now.

“It’s gotten to the condition where it’s dilapidated,” Brauckmann said. “It’s in dire need of [replacement]. There are missing components all over it. It’s not really feasible to fix it. The natural course is you take it out and replace it.”

Now that  from the county freeholders, upgrades to the park’s bathroom and concession stand will take place this fall.

In addition to the new structure, the six-person swing set will be refurbished and put in place along with new benches or picnic tables. The .

Before that can be done, the empty space needs to be graded and cleaned. That, along with the swing set, will be done in-house. The actual construction of the structure will be outsourced and cost around $5,000—which is coming from the second round of grant money the township was awarded.

“We’re trying to get it done as fast as we can do it,” Brauckmann said. “We felt it was a good time to get it done now. There’s going to be some construction going on and we hope our residents understand. And we’ll have a beautiful new structure.”

I am sure Mayor Brauckmann will be planning something for senior citizens next; I mean something more than the monthly bingo game.

Maybe the senior citizen's can take their grandchildren (or great grandchildren) to the new playground equipment at Memorial Park after it's constructed?

this is nice - however we have more parks than just Memorial, Wood and Fountain Farms and I also agree something for our Senior Citizens would be great - since they helped build Cinnaminson.....

It is my understanding that the new equpiment sitting at public works was purchased for the now defunct park that sits on route 73. If thats the case, it is nice to know that it is going to be used instead of being forgotten about and never used.

Wow Doug, I cannot wait until you become a senior citizen and people tell you that the only things you are capable of doing is watching over your grands and great grands and pay huge property taxes for schools and playground equipment.

Lori please use normal sentence structure. I really am interested in your posts but the fractured thoughts and ... are annoying.

Great news and I can’t wait to see it finished. I drove by the park near Villenger Ave a few weeks ago and that one also looked pretty new so it is nice things are being fixed up around town. @ Ric and Lynn, the township host card playing, low key exercise and dancing almost every day at the community center, there is a bocce league, a walking path, concerts, and other fun senior activities. What else would you like to see because it seems like Cinnaminson does a lot for its seniors? I am curious and not trying to be a smart aleck.

Lori, Just to be clear. We are in NO way affiliated with the township. I run an online newspaper like any other major daily newspaper. The reason I wrote this for today is because I saw your post about how the structure was gone and talked to the mayor, who also had sent me information about it. I didn't know about one before the other. I can't tell the township to do anything as the editor of Patch but you can certainly relay your concerns to the township as a resident. Thanks, Christina

Ric, I have seen you at meetings before and you are not a senior citizen yourself. From what Christine has written, the playground equipment is funded through the grant program. I can't argue with you about school property taxes but I have kids in the system, so I'm OK with paying what they ask of me!

Ella thanks for the compliment but tell that to my birth certificate. By the way, I am not the only senior citizen in Cinnaminson.
Ric July 31, 2012 at 03:45 PM
Ella, the playground equipment is FUNDED BY TAXPAYERS. It is not from money from heaven. Who do you think pays for the money the county freeholders grant? I will give you a clue; it is not the freeholders who pay the county taxes. By the way, in at least Oklahoma, Georgia and New York seniors are cut a break on school taxes. Why should we pay for something we get no benefit from?

@ Ric - Lighten up.

I think that it would be great if there was a safe way for kids and adults to walk and bike to Memorial Park. Right now, it is surrounded by dangerous roads with no thought to pedestrians and bikers

To Christina .. yes as i stated i did contact the township .. n no one knew at first anything .. not even that the playground had been taken down .. n no date to renew it .. yes i know you are not affiliated with the township and you are a reporter .. n as i stated thank you for your follow up .. n yes i am happy they are finally replacing the equipment but as I said over n over . the point was that it was a surprise n it shouldnt have been .. taxpayers should have been informed prior one way or the other .. of when n what .. so they didnt just show up one day n it was gone...well the township meeting discussed it beginning of july .. but then never took the action to inform the residents .. well now the residents are finding out .. n yes it will be replaced .. for the township not to know anything about the playground plan when you call them was ridiculous ... so i am done here . n i thank you christina for your help ..
