Outdoor Boot Camps Offered at Memorial Park

Subversion Fitness owner Erika Camm will lead the classes throughout the summer.

Looking to get your body beach-ready for this summer without breaking the bank?

For the last few years, Subversion Fitness owner Erika Camm has been using her brand of boot camp-style workouts to get her clients in shape at her Moorestown studio.

Now she's bringing her unique exercise regimen into Cinnaminson, with outdoor boot camps scheduled all summer at Memorial Park.

Camm started out doing outdoor boot camps in a dance studio parking lot in Haddonfield, before opening Subversion at the former Church Street train station in Moorestown three years ago.

And though she enjoys having her own indoor space, Camm admitted she still has a special affection for outdoor exercise.

"I just like the creativity," she said. "It's refreshing ... People meet people. It has a different vibe than indoors."

The Memorial Park boot camps began this week and run every Monday throughout June, with classes at 6:15 a.m. and 6:15 p.m. Each class is just $5—half the normal price. The price goes back up to $10 in July and August, and Camm said she will hold classes on additional days throughout the summer.

The boot camps will consist of a variety of strength training, cardio and team relay exercises. All participants need to bring are a mat and a pair of dumbbells.

Camm plans to mix up the routines, splitting exercise time between the newly refurbished hockey rink and the park's hills "so we never do the same thing ... It's something to keep people on their toes every week."

She stressed that the lessons will be non-competitive and tailored to each individual's desired comfort level. Instead of leading the class and expecting everyone to keep up, Camm said she walks among her boot campers and offers personal instruction.

Committeeman Don Brauckmann, who serves as the township's director of parks and recreation, as well as health and wellness, spearheaded the effort to bring boot camps to Memorial Park in light of its recent revitalization.

"Cinnaminson is happy to team up with Subversion Fitness to offer this program to encourage outdoor fitness to our residents," he said. "Boot camp programs offer people a high intensity workout in a short period of time, which maximizes results."
