Recycle, Cleanup Day to be Held Saturday

The Clean Communities Office is seeking volunteers for its first park cleanup, March 19 at Pennington Park on Creek Road in Delanco.

Volunteers are needed to clear litter and other debris from the shoreline of the 140-acre park that borders the Rancocas Creek. The first cleanup will be held from 9 a.m. to noon.

Volunteers should bring drinking water and wear long pants, sleeves, socks and sturdy close-toed shoes. Bags and gloves will be provided.

“County residents, including quite a few young people, have played no small role in keeping our parks clean and green,” said Freeholder Director Bruce Garganio.  “Obviously it’s very gratifying when folks decide to get a little bit of extra exercise by helping us out.”

In 2010, more than 350 residents collected 27,000 pounds of litter and removed 2,800 pounds of invasive plants during cleanups at county parks.

Other cleanup days include:

  • Rancocas State Park: 9 a.m. to noon, April 2. Volunteers will clean forest and wetland areas of the 700-acre park located on Rancocas Avenue in Hainesport.
  • Amico Island Park: 9 a.m. to noon, April 16. Volunteers will pick up litter along the shoreline of this 55-acre park on Norman Avenue in Delran.
  • Historic Smithville Park: 9 a.m. to noon, April 30. Volunteers will pick up litter and remove invasive plants. Smithville Park is located on Smithville Road in Eastampton.

County residents with old computer equipment and televisions to dispose and/or confidential documents to destroy can attend a free recycling event on Saturday, March 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Robert Shinn Recycling Center, 130 Hancock Ln. off County Route 541 in Westampton.

County residents may bring televisions, computers and laptops to be recycled. Staff will unload electronics directly from vehicles.

In addition, a shredder truck will be on the premises to destroy confidential documents. Residents are asked to limit the amount of material to be shredded to four bags or four copier paper-sized boxes per household.

Two other computer and TV recycling days have been held thus far this year, with 803 residents dropping off 37 tons of electronics for recycling.

This event is for Burlington County residents only, no businesses or nonprofits. Contact the Recycling Office at 609-499-1001 or recycle@co.burlington.nj.us for more information.
