Updated: Shelters Now Closed in Palmyra, Medford

The Florence shelter is the only one open in the county.

Update: Monday, Aug 29, 11:45 a.m.

The Chairville School shelter in Medford and the Charles Street School shelter in Palmyra both closed at 9 a.m. today. The two remaining people in both shelters was transported to the Fountain of Life shelter in Florence. 

Fountain of Life shelter will remain open at this time. The Fountain of Life is both a general needs and a medical needs shelter.

The Charles Street School, located just off Cinnaminson Avenue in Palmyra, will be the site of a Burlington County Red Cross shelter for those who need temporary housing during Hurricane Irene.

The shelter will open at noon today and is located at 100 West Charles Street in Palmyra.

A second shelter will open today in Medford at Chairville School located on 136 Chairville Road. It's slated to open at 4 p.m.

Service dogs are allowed into the shelter, but Red Cross officials said if pets are brought, they will have to be accommodated elsewhere.

Only locals who are in need are encouraged to utilize the shelter, according to Lt. Tim Young of the .

"If you have friends or family that you can stay with, do that, that way, those most in need can use these services," Young said.

County emergency management and Red Cross officials will determine later today if more shelters should be opened.
