Third Wild Animal Tested Positive for Rabies

This time, a rabid skunk was found attacking an opossum in Palmyra.

A third wild animal tested positively for rabies in the Cinnaminson/Palmyra area, officials said this week.

Witnesses on the 300 block of Van Sant Drive, off Temple Boulevard in Palmyra, saw the skunk attack an opossum. Police responded and both animals were destroyed.

This is the . More than a week ago, a resident on Morgan Avenue in Palmyra called in a report of a dying fox. When that animal was tested, it was found to have rabies.

About four weeks ago, officials said a rabid groundhog was chasing two dogs on Morgan Avenue in Cinnaminson. The groundhog was killed by Palmyra Police, according to a representative with local animal control officials M & R Wildlife.

Police are encouraging residents to keep all pets indoors or in the yard and make sure they are properly licensed and vaccinated.

Residents are also instructed to: keep all pet food indoors, not to feed feral cats or stray dogs, keep trashcans covered, clean and cover barbecue grills, and restrict bird food to above-ground feeders.
