Uncontested Incumbents, Christie Cruise in Cinnaminson

Did you vote? Then you were in the minority—less than half of Burlington County voters cast ballots in Tuesday's general election.

It may come as no surprise, but incumbents in both the township committee and school board races won by landslides Tuesday night.

That may have something to do with the fact that both races were uncontested.

Committeewoman Kathy Fitzpatrick won a third term, garnering 3,780 votes. A handful of voters attempted to unseat the former mayor, chipping away at her vote total with 37 write-ins.

Fitzpatrick was initially challenged by Democratic candidate Matthew Paterno. However, Paterno ended up dropping out of the race, citing personal reasons.

Over in the school board race, incumbents Harry Shea (2,381 votes), Pam Crepps (2,379) and Jean Cohen (2,330) also won reelection—though there were 54 write-ins there as well.

Gov. Christie crushed Democratic challenger Sen. Barbara Buono in Burlington County, garnering 62.5 percent (73,857) of the vote to Buono’s 36 percent.

In the county races, Freeholder Joe Donnelly won reelection, garnering 59.8 percent of the vote to Democratic challenger Reva Foster’s 40.1 percent. Donnelly was joined by Sheriff Jean Stanfield, who bested Democratic challenger James Kostopolis 57.7 percent to 42.25 percent, and County Clerk Tim Tyler (55.85), who beat Nancy Youngkin (44.1).

Voter turnout—41 percent—was relatively low in Burlington County, compared with last year’s presidential election, when nearly 75 percent of voters cast ballots. Voter turnout in Cinnaminson was 78 percent in that election, according to county records.

Turnout was also higher in the last gubernatorial election in 2009. Nearly 50 percent of Burlington County voters (55 percent in Cinnaminson) helped Christie beat former Gov. Corzine in that election. Christie narrowly won Burlington County that year, 48.3 percent to 45.75 percent.

Election results and voter turnout numbers by municipality were not available Wednesday. According to numbers posted on the Cinnaminson Township Facebook page Tuesday night, Christie cruised with 68.4 percent of the vote to Buono’s 31.6.
