Intermediate Digital Photography (class 2 of 5) MAgic with Shutter Speed

When you want to instantly capture (without any blur) a baseball being pitched or hit, a soccer ball being kicked, a child jumping over a log, a dog catching a Frisbee, a bird in flight or any moving object, you’ll want to control your camera’s shutter speed or exposure time, also called time value (Tv) on Canon cameras.

But guess what? If you want to show the blur of a pitched ball, the blur of a swinging bat, the blur of a just-kicked soccer ball, the ghostly-smooth view of a waterfall or water fountain, moving car headlights or taillights, a ghostly image of a person, or engage in “light painting”, you’ll ALSO want to use your camera’s shutter speed (or time value time) setting.

In this class you’ll learn some good stuff about this setting, like:

  • What is a shutter and why is it called that?
  • How exactly does it work? (This makes it easier to understand everything else about shutter speed/exposure time)
  • How to find and select a shutter speed/exposure time on your camera.
  • What the range of shutter speeds/exposure times are for your camera
  • How to interpret a shutter speed/exposure times number like “3, 2”5, 8”, 8, 1/8, or 500
  • Where your camera displays its shutter speed before and after you take a picture.
  • When you would use a fast or slow shutter speed (or short or long exposure times.)
  • How the shutter speed numbers relate to the amount light “seen” by your camera.

During this class you’ll use your camera to find, interpret and select the shutter speed settings. Then to put this new found knowledge to use, using your camera, you’ll pick a shutter speed (Time Value) setting to capture  some “light painting” and to make a “ghostly image.”

If time permits, you’ll learn how to use the self-timer on your camera to assist when using slow shutter speeds (long exposure times)

If you own a tripod, please bring it. You’ll need it!

$80 for 5 classes (this is #2 of 5 - Individual classes may be taken for $20 at the discretion of the instructor)

Warning! Before you save a seat for this class, be sure your camera lets you select shutter speed or time value. Not all cameras do.

If you don’t know how to select the shutter speed or time value setting on your camera, the instructor (Den DiMarco) will gladly prepare a “cheat sheet” for your specific camera.

To have one made for you, email your camera’s make and model (for example, Panasonic Lumix DMC-FP1 or Canon PowerShot ELPH 310 HS) to info@extraordinaryed.com. To give the instructor enough time to prepare your cheat sheet, please send us your camera information at least two days before the start of the class.

NOTE: Bring your digital camera (and instruction manual, if available). This class is not designed for iPhone (or cell phone) cameras.

Reserve your seat or call 856-833-9372 (leave a message if outside of store hours)
