In Knots Over Knitting

Knitting can be a very relaxing hobby.

"Oh, that is so sweet, nobody does that anymore!" one of the farmers market customers remarked.

I was sitting in my booth, knitting a cowl with chunky alpaca yarn."You could not be more wrong," I told my admirer with a smile.

In recent years, knitting has gained in popularity. There are thousands of knitting clubs, stores selling yarn, knitting bloggers, knitting magazines ... even romance novels with the main characters being knitters.

My most memorable yarn sale was to a little boy. He approached my booth a little timidly and gently put his hand on a skein of yarn.

"This is so soft and beautiful," he murmured

"Are you a knitter?" I asked the child.

"Yes," the boy nodded, not taking his eyes off the yarn." I am in a special class for children who have problems. My teacher taught me how to knit. When I feel out of control, I take out my knitting, and it calms me right down."

This little guy was adorable! His father, who looked very uncomfortable, nevertheless purchased the yarn for his son. This happened quite a few years ago, but I have not forgotten the boy and sometimes wonder what happened to him.

Recently, my friend, Pat, came to the farm for a relaxing knitting session. She showed me all the beautiful garments she and her sister completed since I last saw her. Pat "rescued" my own knitting project. I knew something wasn't right with the cowl I've been knitting, but I could not figure out how to fix the mistake without unraveling half my rows. Pat went to work. Within minutes, she had the problem solved.

When it comes to knitting, I'm afraid that I'll always be a one-trick pony. I am perfectly fine with knitting only very plain scarves, hats, and cowls. Even with that, I need all the help I can get. Thank you, Pat!
