Tough as Nails

It is hard to find competent farm workers.

Temperatures have dropped quite nicely, which prompted me to tackle several farm chores with renewed energy. I constructed a new compost bin from wooden pallets and placed it in a convenient location for my garden and kitchen debris. Aside from weeds, it already has a generous amount of fruit and vegetable peels, egg shells, and coffee filters composting away in it.

One morning, I trimmed the alpacas' toenails. Even by my standards, the animals were all exceptionally well behaved and cooperative. Since Sanibel is due to give birth any day, I skipped her nails this time. I try to trim nails at least every two months. It's easier to do after a rain when the nails are soft and pliable.

Recently, I helped friends trim the nails of their alpacas. Diann threw out her back and was not able to bend down. She is tough as nails and does not shy away from hard work, but the back injury made it impossible for her to do the job.

I have a real fear of becoming incapacitated and not being able to do my farm work. Over the years, I've become more safety conscious to avoid injuries. It is very hard to find competent farm helpers. There are also issues with insurance. All things considered, I prefer not to have employees.

Helping friends is a pleasure because I know they will be there for me in an emergency. After all the alpacas were taken care of, we had a nice lunch and relaxing visit.
