Are Your Pet Covered?  (By Dr. Nicholas)

I highly recommend that every pet be covered by a good pet insurance policy.

September is National Pet Insurance Month, and so it's a great time to bring up the important topic of financial preparedness for the accidents, illnesses, and other conditions that could affect your pets. Having been on the front lines and having seen far too many pet owners struggle with the financial realities of necessary (and often expensive) medical and/or surgical care - particularly in emergency and other unexpected situations - I cannot recommend enough that every person with pets be aware of and look into getting a good pet insurance policy.

There are a lot of companies out there that offer pet insurance, and not all of them are created equal - so you've got to do your homework. To get you started off in the right direction, I'm listing a few important links below. Please explore them and seriously consider this topic of financial preparedness for your pet's health care.

Though I hope I shouldn't have to, I do want to make clear that I have no vested or conflict of interest in making this recommendation for pet insurance... aside from my desire to help save pets from "economic euthanasia" and you from the distress of potentially having to weigh your pet's health and comfort against making your mortgage payment or possible crushing credit card debt. I receive no compensation for making this recommendation. As, I hope you know, I truly just want to make sure that you are prepared - for every aspect of your pet's wellness and care, and financial preparedness is a huge and very important aspect.

And for those of you who will ask - as many have already done - the three companies that I tend to recommend, based on experience (both first-hand and from what I've heard from others), are Trupanion, Embrace, and PetPlan. But again, those are my general recommendations, every pet and pet owner has different needs and resources. And with that in mind, I'd truly love to hear about your pet insurance thoughts, experiences, and recommendations - you can post about them on my Facebook page (I'll be putting up a pet insurance month post today) and/or you can easily tell your story and share your thoughts on the "Pet Insurance" forum page on my website.

Thank you for following along and for letting me help you keep your pets happy, healthy, and safe. I hope that this information has been (or will be) useful to you. Please feel free to share this information with your pet-owning friends, family, and neighbors - Send to a Friend. And also let them know that they can easily sign up for these free weekly tips under the "Learn" tab on the website navigation bar. Have a safe and wonderful weekend and, as always, please...

Be aware. Be prepared. Be Preventive!
