Possible Outbreak Alert: Feline Panleukopenia (Feline Distemper)

Hello, Patch Pet Lovers!

The information I am providing was posted on HousePaws Mobile Veterinary Service's Facebook page and is not to scare you... it is to inform you, as the virus can be very easily and quickly spread.

Dogs, humans, and pocket pets CANNOT become infected with Feline Distemper.

Please read HousePaws' post below to learn about Feline Distemper and their recommendations... if you have any questions, contact them directly by emailing: info@housepawsmobilevet.com

"Possible Outbreak Alert: Please share! We have seen a confirmed case of Feline Panleukopenia (Feline Distemper). This is a lethal virus that hits cats quickly and we see loss of life sometimes up to 50-75% of cases even with advanced hospitalized care. We work with a lot of rescue groups and share this information to help everyone look for signs to prevent spread of outbreaks. The virus is easily spread by fomites (stuff likes clothes, shoes, toys, fleas, body fluids, etc.) Please make sure your pets have current FVRCP vaccines OR good titers to this vaccine. Symptoms can include: diarrhea, appetite loss, fever, and/or vomiting. If you are considering adopting a pet at this time please have a vet make sure the pet is healthy prior to bringing pet into you home AND always quarantine a new pet entering your household for 2 weeks prior to introducing to your other pets. Dogs, humans, pocket pets can not catch feline panleuk. If you were considering a surgery at a low cost clinic or shelter please make sure your pet is vaccinated at least 2 weeks prior to having surgery so they have some protection. If you take care of stray cats outside please wash your hands thoroughly and disinfect your soles of your shoes and change clothes prior to entering your house. And please do not be alarmed ...these outbreaks happen...knowledge is power or as GI Joe says " Knowing is half the battle" . This message is shared to have you be aware and take proper precautions to keep your furry love babies safe. : ) If you have any questions or concerns email us at info@housepawsmobilevet.com We don't normally see this virus at this time of year but it is possible we are seeing it due to the late flea season?"
