Be aware of the dangers of homemade playdough
With the weather getting colder and the holiday season already upon us, many of the parents (or aunts, uncles, or grandparents) amongst you may be looking for fun and easy ways to entertain the kids. Many people turn to homemade playdough, which is indeed both fun and easy, but it's important to recognize that it can also pose a serious health hazard to your pets.

Many homemade playdough recipes call for a large quantity of salt, and it's this that can wreak havoc with your pet. Not only can these large quantities of salt cause neurologic problems such as seizures and coma, but they can also increase the workload of your pet's heart, which can also prove deadly in a pet with pre-existing heart problems.

- Keep your pets in their "safe place" while the kids are playing with playdough
- Depending on their age, explain to the kids that the playdough (and many other of their toys) can be dangerous to their pets
- Don't let the kids run around with the play dough, keep its use confined to one (easy-to-clean) area
- Be sure to check carefully and pick up any of the playdough before letting the pets out of their "safe place"
- Be careful where you store the playdough when not in use
As you can see, you needn't ban homemade playdough entirely from your home, just take the simple steps above to ensure that it doesn't find its way into your pet's mouth.
