BurlCo Sheriff Rounds Up Child Support Scofflaws

The Burlington County Sheriff's Department arrested 11 people as part of a national campaign against family violence.

The Burlington County Sheriff’s Department arrested 11 people last week as part of a nationwide campaign against family violence.

The National Family Violence Apprehension Detail, which took place on Oct. 16, included approximately 200 county sheriff’s offices, police departments, probation departments and community agencies from more than 20 states, according to a release from the sheriff’s department. The agencies involved served outstanding arrest warrants for charges ranging from failure to pay child support to murder.

“Family and domestic violence is a real issue that many people do not talk about or try to hide,” said Sheriff Jean Stanfield. “Programs like this one help make the public aware of the issue and the need for individuals to be held accountable.”

The Burlington County Sheriff’s Department attempted to serve warrants on 30 offenders, resulting in the arrest of 11 people with a total of 15 outstanding warrants. Some of the arrested individuals had numerous warrants.

“Enforcing child support orders sends a clear message that the needs of our children must be met. This is a critical issue, which affects all taxpayers,” Stanfield said. “When child support goes unpaid, the cost of care often falls on state and county social service and other agencies.”
