Former Cinnaminson Police Lt. William Peters Dies

Services for William J. Peters, the only Cinnaminson officer ever shot in the line of duty, will be tonight.

Former Cinnaminson Police Lt. William J. Peters passed away peacefully on November 29, 2012 at his residence surrounded by his family.

According to Cinnaminson officials, Peters is the only officer in Cinnaminson Police history who was shot in the line of duty. Peters ultimately retired in 1972 due to his injuries he sustained from the shooting.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, Peters was 72 years old.

His family: Beloved wife and best friend of 53 years, Helene (Czaja); Loving father of Michele (Shelly) Peters, Mark (Michelle) Peters and Nicole (Andrew) Necowitz. Loving Grand-Pop Joe to Kyle, Kelsey, Colin and Kylie. Brother of John Peters, Kenneth (Patricia) Peters and the late Wayne Peters. Brother-in-law of Phyllis White. Uncle of Bryant (Jeanette) Peters, Karl (Daneil) Peters, Lisa (Eric) Gross, their daughter Molly, Kelly (Marty) Leaf and Kevin White.

Peters was a resident of Cinnaminson since 1958. He served on the Cinnaminson Police Department from 1961 to 1974, retiring as a lieutenant. After his retirement, Bill was employed by Resorts International for 12 years.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Peters' Life Celebration and viewing tonight 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday morning 9 to 10 a.m. at Snover/Givnish of Cinnaminson, 1200 Route 130 North.

His Funeral Mass will follow 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church 4th St. and Linden St. Riverton, NJ. Interment Lakeview Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and/or Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
