Moorestown Police: Man Carjacked, Beaten and Shot

The Trenton man escaped from the trunk of his car after being left by his shooter in Moorestown Tuesday.

A 61-year-old Trenton man was carjacked in the state capital early Tuesday morning, pistol-whipped, shot in the head, thrown in his trunk and left behind a shopping center in Moorestown, police said.

Sgt. Lee Lieber said a Moorestown officer was on patrol around 11 a.m. Tuesday when he was flagged down by customers at the Pep Boys on Route 38 by the Kmart shopping center.

The officer arrived to find the Trenton man lying on the ground, bleeding.

The man told police he had been carjacked in Trenton around 5:30 a.m. by a black male, Lieber said.

According to Trenton Police, the suspect pulled the victim out of the car—a beige or champagne Honda Accord—and pistol-whipped him. During the beating, the suspect’s gun went off, striking the 61-year-old man in the head.

The suspect threw the man in the trunk and drove around for several hours, abandoning the car behind the Pep Boys. The victim eventually escaped from the trunk by pushing in the rear seats, Moorestown police said.

The victim was taken to Cooper University Hospital in Camden and was in stable condition Tuesday afternoon, Trenton Police said. Police did not release his name.

The suspect is described as an approximately 40-year-old black male, light to medium complexion, of medium build, between 5 feet, 11 inches and 6 feet tall. He was last seen wearing black pants, a black cap and carrying a black book bag.

Anyone with information is urged to call Trenton Police Det. Scott Peterson at 609-989-4159 or the confidential tipline at 609-989-3663, or email tips to tpdtips@trentonpolice.net.

Lieber said Moorestown Police were assisting Trenton with the investigation.
