Mt. Laurel Man Shot and Killed After Firing at Cop

A Burlington City police officer returned fire after Jason T. Bunnell shot at him during a foot chase late Monday night, according to authorities.

A Burlington City cop shot and killed a man who fired at the officer during a foot chase late Monday night.

According to the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office, the officer was on patrol just before midnight when he stopped and attempted to speak with a suspicious man—later identified as Jason T. Bunnell, 32, last known address Mount Laurel—walking near a car dealership on the 1200 block of Route 130 South, near the border with Burlington Township.

Bunnell fled on foot, and the officer ran after him. The chase led to an overgrown lot near the dealership, where authorities said Bunnell fired a shot at the officer. The officer was not struck, and returned fire, fatally striking Bunnell.

The officer was evaluated and released from an area hospital and will be placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated. Authorities did not release his name. The investigation is being conducted by detectives from the Burlington City Police Department, the Burlington Township Police Department and the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office Crime Scene Unit, Major Crimes Unit and Special Investigations Unit.

As directed under the Attorney General’s guidelines, the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office will review the investigation once it has been completed to determine whether the officer’s use of force was appropriate.

@Chris. Get real - not ignorant or stupid. I no more know that deceased than you do so take your "friend" and you know where to ..... A man is dead. It is vulgar to gloat unless your name is Rocco and you are from South Philly. I do not think that man deserves sympathy or ridicule. Yes, he deserves admonishment for trying to kill a cop. Good night,

With the economy getting worse & more budget cuts by the cities; the crime rate will greatly increase. There will be more desperate people with weapons committing crimes. Bunnell may have been locked up before & did not want to go back to jail. Maybe he panicked, & thought if he took a random shot at the cop,the cop would not persue him & he could get away. He was wrong, the cop returned fire & killed him. That's the chance he took when he shot at the cop. Iam sure the cop feels really bad that he killed someone. But when someone shoots at you, you return fire, you are defending your life.
