Rt. 130 Named Most Dangerous Road for Pedestrians

Results from a study found the Cinnaminson and Delran sections are among the worst for walkers.

A nonprofit organization focusing on transportation named Route 130 the worst road in the state for pedestrians.

In a three-year study conducted by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign, results show there have been 10 fatalities along Route 130 since 2007. Some of the worst parts, the group found, are in Cinnaminson and Delran, even though there hasn't been a pedestrian fatality here since 2007.

“For three years in a row, [Route 130] continues to be New Jersey’s most dangerous road,” said Kate Slevin, executive director for the campaign, in a statement. “With three lanes in each direction, a speed limit of 50 miles per hour along most of the route, dotted with retail destinations, the Burlington Pike is a perfect example of the dangerous suburban thoroughfares we’ve found to be the most deadly for pedestrians.”

Sgt. Ernest McGill, of the Cinnaminson Township Police Department, said the stretch of Route 130 in Cinnaminson is definitely not pedestrian-friendly.

“We did have a problem with it before,” McGill said. “Especially with the old motels down Route 130. We had a big problem with people jumping the barrier.”

It’s been enforced, however, and McGill said the number of tickets written has dwindled. And, the number of fatalities has gone down.

There have been no pedestrian fatalities in the last three years in Cinnaminson. There were two in 2007, and one in both 2005 and 2006.

When Route 130, a state highway, was built, there wasn’t a lot of foot traffic, McGill said. Therefore, there aren’t a lot of sidewalks. Overpasses such as the one in the middle of town, at Route 130 and Riverton Road, provide a safe way for pedestrians to cross the street.

“You see a lot of people using it,” McGill said.

Analysis from the Tri-State Transportation Campaign was based on data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System.

Other roads topping the state list were Blackhorse Pike in Atlantic County, Route 1 in Middlesex County and Route 549 in Ocean County.
