Sentencing for Cancer Scammer Delayed

Lori Stilley lied about a terminal cancer diagnosis for more than year. She pleaded guilty in May to swindling well-wishers.

Lori Stilley, the Delran woman whose brazen cancer scheme bilked supporters out of thousands of dollars, will have to wait longer to finalize her sentence.

Stilley's sentencing for third-degree theft by deception was pushed to Aug. 15; it was originally scheduled for July 26. She pleaded guilty to the charge in May.

The scope and audacity of Stilley's efforts to convince people she had terminal bladder cancer shocked family and friends when the scheme came crashing down. For months, Stilley had engineered stories about her struggle with cancer. Friends organized multiple charity events for her, even leading up to a discounted wedding when Stilley told people she wanted to marry before she died.

Stilley went as far as writing an e-book about her "struggle," and announced plans to enter hospice before a sudden miracle cure. Her sister, suspicious of the sudden improvement in a supposed terminal case, ultimately turned Stilley in for lying about the cancer and collecting thousands in donations.

Stilley was arrested in September 2012, and pleaded guilty eight months later. Her plea deal calls for four years of probation, $15,000-$20,000 restitution payments, a psychiatric evaluation, 100 hours of community service and relinquishing her right to appeal the conviction.
