UPDATED: Woman Dead in Overnight Shooting in Riverton

The woman's body was found just before 5:30 a.m. Sunday, authorities said.

An unidentified woman was found dead after an overnight shooting in Riverton, Burlington County Prosecutor Robert D. Bernardi said.

The woman was found fatally shot on Carriage House Lane just before 5:30 a.m. Sunday, Bernardi said, after a call to police of a report of a person down on the ground between Lippincott and Thomas Avenues.

She has yet to be identified by authorities, Bernardi said, no arrests have been made and the shooting is still under investigation. Authorities are waiting on an autopsy by Burlington County Medical Examiner Dr. Ian Hood.

Riverton Police posted a message to its Facebook page Sunday afternoon, attempting to assure residents concerned over the shooting.

The message reads:

"The Riverton Police Department wants the residents and businesses in Riverton to know that there is no reason for alarm over the breaking news from earlier this morning. Our department, in conjunction with the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office, is actively and diligently investigating the events of this morning, but we want you to know you are safe to participate in all of your normal daily activities, including being outside, jogging, walking your dogs, etc. We will update you with pertinent information when we can."

Riverton Police Chief John Shaw said the message to residents was a "preemptive strike" designed to put residents' minds at ease before the Internet rumor mill had a chance to stir things up. 

The Burlington County Prosecutor's Office stated no further information would be released Sunday. Stay with Patch for updates as they become available.

Shaw said he believed the last fatal shooting in the borough occurred in the '70s or '80s.
