An unidentified woman was found fatally shot on Carriage House Lane in Riverton Sunday morning.

An unidentified woman was found dead after an overnight shooting in Riverton, Burlington County Prosecutor Robert D. Bernardi said.

The woman was found fatally shot on Carriage House Lane just before 5:30 a.m. Sunday, Bernardi said, after a call to police of a report of a person down on the ground between Lippincott and Thomas Avenues.

She has yet to be identified by authorities, Bernardi said, no arrests have been made and the shooting is still under investigation. Authorities are waiting on an autopsy by Burlington County Medical Examiner Dr. Ian Hood.

Riverton Police posted a message to its Facebook page Sunday afternoon, attempting to assure residents concerned over the shooting.

The message reads:

"The Riverton Police Department wants the residents and businesses in Riverton to know that there is no reason for alarm over the breaking news from earlier this morning. Our department, in conjunction with the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office, is actively and diligently investigating the events of this morning, but we want you to know you are safe to participate in all of your normal daily activities, including being outside, jogging, walking your dogs, etc. We will update you with pertinent information when we can."

Riverton Police Chief John Shaw said the message to residents was a "preemptive strike" designed to put residents' minds at ease before the Internet rumor mill had a chance to stir things up.

The Burlington County Prosecutor's Office stated no further information would be released Sunday. Stay with Patch for updates as they become available.

Shaw said he believed the last fatal shooting in the borough occurred in the '70s or '80s.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting or the victim for investigators is asked to call Burlington County Central Communications at 609-265-7113.

This is very strange, this street is dark, but not secluded. For someone to be killed here is disturbing.

Yes we can continue our normal activities but it's time to face the truth. The train is giving easy access to our desirable community to those less fortunate. It's like coming to the Cherry Hill Mall to shop for some of the crooks. We all work hard and must leave the home during the day to be able to maintain our well-groomed homes, properties and vehicles. We must be vigilant in looking out for one another. Doors, windows especially basement, cars, garages and sheds must be locked at all time. Even if working in the front or back yard. Most of us recognize our immediate neighbors, local dog walkers and joggers. Report any suspicious individuals or vehicles in your area to the Riverton police immediately. They want to hear from us. We can be their eyes and ears.

Thats interesting, she was from ohio so how on earth did she find a secluded spot near the river in the small town...People cruise the area for empty houses during the day and calling the police will not help b/c they will be gone by the time they get there...
