Barone's Demolished

The former service center along Route 130 has been knocked down.

Demolition crews leveled Barone's Service Center last Friday afternoon but the empty lot will have to wait until spring to get a makeover.

"The goal for the moment was to get it down, clean up the lot and have it as open space temporarily," said Mayor Ben Young.

Township committee has talked for months about grassing it over and landscaping it, but none of that can happen until winter is over, Young said.

The township purchased the land last year for about $355,000. Remediation work was done on the spot, Mayor said, but those final reports are not yet available.

Prior to the township purchasing the spot, Deputy Mayor Anthony Minniti said the only potential buyer for the lot was Goodwill, whose officials wanted to put a clothing donation box there.

Patrick McD January 28, 2013 at 07:46 pm
Still don't understand this one!
Phil January 28, 2013 at 09:07 pm
What's so hard to understand in this? The Twp. had grant money (from the county) whose sole purpose and could only be used on Rt. 130. The lot had been abandoned for years and the only other bidder on the property was Goodwill who wanted to pave it over and put some donation boxes on it. The township said we're going to lose this grant money before the end of the FY so lets bid on the property, demolish it, and turn it into a grassy/landscaped area. No business would buy that lot do to new NJDOT requirements surrounding entrances/exits for businesses at intersections like Highland and 130 so the choices were keep an abandoned property, let Goodwill make it a paved area with big 'ol drop-off containers, or buy it and grass/tree it out.

Thank you very much for that explanation Phil.
Barb Rivera January 28, 2013 at 10:55 pm
Well while the township applies for and receives Grant $$ for Rte 130, I am sure there are many FLOODED Residents that would appreciate the township looking into GRANT $$ for this.
Don January 29, 2013 at 02:37 am
Key points. "No business would buy..." and I cannot imagine it being worth $350,000 to Goodwill for drop-off containers. I am sure Goodwill would have paid a lot less so why didn't we? What about the abandoned station at Willow and Rt 130? Was that even considered?

D Griff 11 January 29, 2013 at 05:28 pm
Girl that's some cray-shizzle! You know what they say though, "when life hands you lemonades, knock down barone's!"
Frank Szymkowski January 29, 2013 at 05:52 pm
I for one, am glad this abandoned building is gone and it is going to be grass instead of a Goodwill depot, that's for sure.
Barb Rivera January 29, 2013 at 07:58 pm
@Don.. I agree! Nobody was interested and GoodWill wasn't going to spend nearly that amount of $$ for donation containers. Why did we pay $355,000 and how much $$ did the Roofing Company make tearing it down?
Phil January 29, 2013 at 08:16 pm
Why do you keep saying that? Go back and read the Patch articles. The property was valued at $400k.
John January 29, 2013 at 08:20 pm
@Barb, good question, maybe it was assessed that amount...I hope we are not going to do the same thing with Willow and 130 station....but who knows....Its like the water it goes where it wants to :)
John January 30, 2013 at 04:37 pm
Oh boy more work for the public works dept...cutting the grass, lets make sure they know its not going to be too high....
Barb Rivera February 7, 2013 at 04:50 am
@Phil...practically this entire township is way over assessed! If this property sat vacant for years as it did, what does that tell you about the price? Um, over priced hence NO INTEREST!
Linda April 15, 2013 at 06:49 pm
Demolish the whole block please. Whats the plan already for this site?
Linda April 15, 2013 at 06:49 pm

Linda April 15, 2013 at 06:50 pm

We were totally disappointed at the Palmyra Council Meeting last night. The ordinance requiring theRead More Inspection, Registration, and Licensing of Residential Rental Properties was opposed by many concerned citizens. Concerns were stated and questions asked, but few were answered or addressed! I still do not know if the NJ State code supercedes this ordinance, since no one addressed my concerns. The legality of this ordinance was questioned and it was mentioned that similar laws have been challenged in other towns and invalidated by the NJ courts. Why did the council not form a committee with those landlords that expressed a willingness to work together to come to an acceptable compromise and passage of an ordinance that is legal and for the good of all of Palmya?
Mystery Diner June 18, 2013 at 10:11 pm
I actually agree with most of what you say. If they face a court challenge and lose, they are dumberRead More than I thought. My point is that something has to be done. I feel that inaction is unacceptable. I literally have neighbors moving/trying to move because of 1 or 2 rental properties. Garbage on the lawn. Garbage in the street. Lawn only gets cut twice a year. Broken glass in the street. Multiple cars taking up space in front of homeowner's homes. Junk cars leaking oil in the streets. Broken porches, railings and windows. The drugs. The drugs. They should enforce current codes! The police should do their jobs. I hope that these new rules don't hurt innocent people, but some landlords have shown that they don't give a damn about the community that their "investments" are in.
Phyllis Blackeby June 18, 2013 at 10:26 pm
I only wish that they would use the laws on the books. If 800 violations have been written sinceRead More April, then why do they need to pass this ordinance and have excessive fees and hurt me the small landlord who just spent over $7,000 fixing up my apartment. Palmyra has a large budget deficit, is this ordinance how the Council hopes to remedy the budget problem- $125. at a time?

This is great, we send our kids to school to read write and do math and yet when they have to putRead More things down for writing something for a college admissions we have to send them to professionals for help....So in esscence we are wasting our tax money and just providing teachers with a salary....No wonder the USA is in trouble...If its not on an I phone we cannot do it....Food for thought....
