Township Committee Meeting Preview: Feb. 13

There will be four public hearings on four ordinances this evening.

Township committee meets tonight at the township municipal building at 7:30 p.m. Here are five things they will be discussing:

1. Environmental commission—A public hearing will be held on an ordinance that calls for the phrase "environmental commission" to be omitted from the township code book. Mayor Don Brauckmann said the group is an environmental committee or advisory board, not a commission. Members will be appointed by the mayor on an as-needed basis.

2. Parking and roadway obstructions—A second reading and public hearing of this ordinance deals with establishing an ordinance that would enact parking restrictions on certain roadway obstructions, such as trailers, recreation vehicles and water sport vehicles on the streets of Cinnaminson.

3. Pay-to-play/contract awards—Township committee members will vote on an ordinance that upholds state statute regarding requests for qualifications and proposals for certain services. The New Jersey Campaign Contributions and Expenditures Reporting Act says if quotes for services are less than $17,500, the project does not need to go out for bid. This is the second reading of the ordinance and a public hearing will be held.

4. Fire Department and Shade Tree Commission—A second reading and public hearing will be held for an ordinance that amends a chapter of the township code referring to the fire district as part of the township—the fire district is a separate entity. Also, another chapter alludes to the "Shade Tree Commission" which Cinnaminson does not have or wish to create.

5. Proclamation to author—A proclamation will be presented to Yoko Kawashima Watkins, a Japanese author who wrote So Far From the Bamboo Grove and travels to Cinnaminson Middle School each year to talk to students who have read her novel. Cynthia Astrom, midle school teacher, will accept the award on Yoko's behalf. Yoko will be presented with the proclamation when she visits the district Feb. 27.
