It may soon be illegal to smoke anywhere on the boardwalk in Ocean City.

The current ordinance restricts smoking to designated areas, but Ocean City Council will consider on first reading an ordinance banning smoking anywhere on the boardwalk, including the ramps and stairs leading to the boardwalk.

The proposed penalty for smoking in these areas is $100-$250 for the first offense and $500-$1,000 for any subsequent offense.

The matter will be considered when council convenes at the municipal complex Thursday night, 7 p.m.

The area of the ordinance prohibiting smoking in parks and recreational areas would be amended to include the boardwalk, according to the agenda packet posted on the city’s website.

Smoking is already prohibited at the city’s indoor facilities, including the Ocean City Music Pier and Ocean City Sports and Civic Center.

What do you think? Should smoking be prohibited on the Ocean City Boardwalk? Vote in our poll and let us know in the comments section below.

@lovemancos - You know the story of the north end toll? The feds paid for that bridge and they weren't allowed to have tolls. So the county chipped in just enough money to build the toll both so they could legally charge a toll. One more scam people will be paying for.

I am in agreement with a smoking ban, OC has children everywhere & they should not ever be exposed to second hand smoke. It would also help my asthma from making me sick every time I go to the boards. Right now, everybody smokes where ever they are & do not pay attention to designated areas. Another problem is the butts thrown in the streets, on the beaches, & on the boards, which could cause a fire. Thank you for listening.

I'm in agreement with a smoking ban. Enforcing it becomes the challenge!

I feel really sorry for anyone with a breathing problem, I do not consider smoking in front of children to be allowed. I was raised in a smoking household. I smoke. I enjoy it immensely. One of my 3 children chooses to smoke. I choose to smoke. I have quit for many years and I am not happy when I don't smoke. I try not to invade non smoker areas. I step to a secluded location to indulge. Non smokers can be very aggressive in their intolerance. I will not refrain from my happiness in order to be permitted in an exclusive environment. Therfore unless some consideration is not shown on my behalf, the boardwalk will not recieve my patronage. Smokers are part of the public. They should have their areas.

Totally selfish to ignore the health hazard to the largest majority of people because of your own addiction. Many more people will shop on the boardwalk when a non smoking policy is put into effect. And remember.... smoke doesn't read signs.
