Time of the Essence for NJ Special Election

Deadlines are approaching to register to vote in the special Senate election, plus other upcoming elections.

This year there will be a special primary in August and a special election in October to replace Sen. Frank Lautenberg, in addition to the general election in November. The League of Women Voters of Burlington County, is very concerned that voter confusion will limit voter turnout.

To counteract this confusion and increase voter participation, Loretta Lynch, president of the League of Women Voters of Burlington County, has released the following voting information:

For the Special Senatorial Primary Election being held on Tuesday, August 13, 2013, the deadline to register to vote or change your address is July 23. You can apply by mail for the mail-in ballot, and the county clerk must receive your application by August 6. Or you can apply in person at the County Clerk’s office, 49 Rancocas Rd., First Floor, Mt. Holly—609-265-5122—for the mail-in ballot by August 12, at 3 p.m. (The deadline to change party affiliation for the primary has already passed. But if you are a registered unaffiliated vote, you may declare a party affiliation on primary election day at the polls and vote in that party’s primary)

For the Special Senatorial General Election being held Wednesday, October 16, 2013, the deadline to register to vote or change your address is September 25. You can apply by mail for the mail-in ballot which must be received by the county clerk by October 9, or apply in person for the mail-in ballot by October 15, at 3 p.m.

For the November General Election being held November 5, 2013, the deadline to register to vote or change your address is October 15, 2013. You can apply by mail for the mail-in ballot which must be received by the County Clerk by October 29, or apply in person for the mail-in ballot by November 4, at 3 p.m.

To contact the League of Women Voters of Burlington County for further information or to set up a group registration event, call 856-396-5600 and leave a message on voicemail or go to their website at lwvburlco.org. In addition, the League of Women Voters of New Jersey will staff their voter assistance toll-free hotline 1 (800)792-VOTE (8683), from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., on the above election dates, the same time the polls are open. At other times the hotline is open during normal business hours.
