Pumpkin Launch

How many homecomings include catapults?

The Spartan Engineering Club’s Second Annual Pumpkin Launch will be the grand finale of Doane Academy’s homecoming festivities on October 15.

A dozen teams have built a total of nine (9) trebuchets (i.e. catapults) and three (3) cannons. They will launch 4” x 6” pumpkins across the secondary soccer field (located off of the main parking lot and parallel to the Burlington-Bristol Bridge).

Over 60 students and teachers will compete for the longest distance and highest precision prizes. Last year’s top distance was 175 feet.

"Last year, we set out to prove to the student body and Doane community that a successful pumpkin launch was possible,” says Mr. Michael Russell, Engineering Club Adviser. “This year, I thoroughly expect all the launchers to top last year's best. Look out, Delaware River!"

The Pumpkin Launch is the final daytime activity of Homecoming 2011. Earlier in the day there will be an Alumni Soccer Game, a Cook-Out, the Homecoming Soccer Game, with activities and games throughout for students.
