'Shattered Glass' to Hold Workshop at CHS

Its members are from all over the world.

Shattered Glass, a conductor-less strings ensemble will perform at Cinnaminson High School today as part of a three-day workshop with strings students from the district.

The workshop will culminate with an open rehearsal/performance Wednesday, Feb. 13 with the ensemble and Cinnaminson’s 100 strings students in grades 3-12.

The group will also perform at 7 p.m. tonight in the high school's auditorium.

Shattered Glass is a 12-member ensemble whose members represent Russia, Venezuela, Korea, China, Taiwan and cities across the United States. It was founded in January 2012. The group met while attending the Manhattan School of Music. Members have performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and Merkin Hall.

The workshop is being sponsored by the Cinnaminson Strings Parents group, which was created to generate support between strings families and the strings program. A string instrument is a challenge to learn, but the benefits of playing a string instrument carry through to the classroom and beyond.

Other recent workshops sponsored by the parents group include electric violinist Mark Wood, who was a former member of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and electro acoustic violist Martha Mooke.

“To have visiting professional musicians from varied musical genres is a rare and treasured event for a school; without the string parents support group these unique educational and inspirational experiences could never happen,” said David Hercock, who has been the district’s sole strings instructor since September 2001.

The concert, which is at 7 p.m. in the Cinnaminson High School auditorium, is free of charge. Donations will gladly be accepted to help offset the cost of the workshop.

The Cinnaminson Strings program in Cinnaminson is phenomenal. Mr. Hercock is absolutely committed to these kids and never fails to bring nationally recognized talent to work with the kids. The strings program is clearly amongst the best in the state due to the hard work of these kids and the dedication displayed by Mr. Hercock.
