Should Social Security Numbers Be Required for School Enrollment?

New Jersey school district accused of discriminating against immigrants due to documentation policy.

A New Jersey school district agreed to change its policy on documents needed to register children last week after it was sued by the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey.

The Butler School District was accused of discriminating against immigrant families by requiring parents to show a driver’s license photo ID or other state or county-issued identification when enrolling children in the district.

Those forms of identification require social security numbers or valid immigration status.

In a statement following the decision, the ACLU-NJ said, “While school districts may require proof of residency, the Constitution and state regulations mandate that public schools provide equal access to students regardless of their or their parents’ immigration status.”

So what do you think? Was the change by Butler the right move, or should it have stood by its policy? Should the state allow school districts to only require proof of residency, or should registration for enrollment require more specific documentation?

Marie and all. people cram into one place not because they are trying to beat the system. The fact is no one likes to sleep and live with other people. they are doing it because out of pure economic necessity. these people are broke with bad jobs. Why they stay in NJ, I have not a clue. But the state government has gotten so large and expensive it has become too expensive for its citizens to handle. Now the people exists so the government can grow and exist. Property taxes are the highest in the nation, yet it is still not enough for this government to exist. They have sales tax, income tax, yet there is still not enough. they send out the state troopers to write tickets and get most the population in on the point surcharge, still it is not enough. People are forced to live two to a room in the 30's. So sad. Just getting up in the morning you owe the state so much money.

Oh boo hoo, I have to pay taxes, boo hoo. But I want fire protection, police protection, good schools, good roads, good bridges, snow removal, a functioning judicial system, safe food, drinkable water, insured bank deposits, etc. Taxes are the price you pay for living in a civilized society. NJ property taxes are amongst the highest in the country (some cities and other municipalities are just as high) but our other taxes are middling and even lower than some other states. I hate paying taxes as much as anyone else but it's the price we pay for living in an advanced first world country. NJ is one of the wealthier states, it ranks 2nd for the percentage of millionaires and billionaires who live in the state. It has great schools and many great colleges and universities.

"It has great schools" - - that's so reassuring, coming from an unbiased observer, Joe.

NJ has great schools, that's not my opinion, it's a fact. NJ always rates in the top tier of states for good educational outcomes. It's right up there with Mass. and CT.
