Two Incumbents, One Newcomer Round Out School Board Seats

The school board race in Cinnaminson is uncontested this year.

Two incumbents have retained their seats on the Cinnaminson School Board and one newcomer will join the group.

In the uncontested race, incumbents James McGuckin and Dolores Woodington kept their spots and Laura Fitzwater will replace Linda Lamb, who did not seek re-election.

According to unofficial election results, McGuckin received 3,535 votes, Woodington received 3,305 votes and Fitzwater received 3,309 votes.

Fitzwater has been doing her homework. She's been attending school board meetings for the last few months "to familiarize myself with the process there," she said.

She said she's also been doing webinars and getting information from the New Jersey School Board Association's website.

Each school board member is a party of one or more committees. Fitzwater, a college professor, said her forte is the educational and instructional areas.

"I would be useful there," she said.

Fitzwater has three children, two of which are currently in the school district.

Reorganization will take place the first week of January.

I am sure the Cinnaminson teacher's union is very excited that Fitzwater, a center city Philly teacher's union member is on our small town school board. How could she ever dare say no to fellow union member in Cinnaminson and remain in good standing with her big city union buddies?

Yes

I think it's great she is on the board. She is well educated and well qualified. Maybe our school system will move in a positive direction. However, we still need way more money funneled into our high school. The lack of smart boards and technology there is truly an embarrassment . The physical aspect of the school is equally embarrassing . Having kids who are heavily involved in sports I have been to many, many high schools. I can easily sat that Cinnaminson High is one of the ugliest, most decrepit schools in New Jersey. I can't even beleive that it has gotten to that point. I guess it is also because of the selfishness of those who continually vote down the school budget. They just do not get that the kids are our future and they are what really matter.
Sobest of luck to Mrs. Fitzwater. I am sure she will be am asset to the school board. I hope she will just simply ignore the miserable naysayers who cannot wait for even 12 hours to throw in their ridiculous comments .

@Hy Lit. I am sure the Cinnaminson teacher’s union is excited to have an ally on the negotiating table. Even our schoolchildren know how all Philadelphia unions work against the public’s interest. I am just amazed why more qualified people stepped down so Fitzwater could take the position. Perhaps you care to explain that?
And what qualifications? She is merely a part teacher at Philly Community College – one of hundreds. Only a fellow teacher’s union member, family or friend would think that makes her a great addition to the Cinnaminson school board. Which are you that allow you to think she is a great addition? Please let Fitzwater know my comments are not to be taken personal – they are merely facts. By the way, I noticed this is your very first message at Patch. Welcome – that is unless you are known by other names. It would not be the first time. It looks like we have a Cinnaminson town council member who does that a lot at this site. If you think the school needs to adjust it priorities then there is this wonderful mechanism called cutting cost to pay for improvements. Have you hear of it? By the way, I can easily say there are a lot more schools in this state that are in far worse condition. Just drive to Newark, Willingboro, Jersey City, or Camden. Obviously you know not what you say. The embarrassment is your lack of knowledge. PS: I looked hard. I could not find any miserable naysayers – well except for you. Do not be so hard on yourself.
Hy Lit November 8, 2012 at 12:48 am
The costs are already cut enough. Teachers cannot be paid any less. Their jobs are difficult enough. They also have to deal with the reduction in their benefits thanks to Governor Christy. And are you serious? Comparing Cinnaminson to Jersey City and Newark. And she is a great addition because she is willing to give her time and help make our schools better. And do you have a problem with the teachers union? Why do they not deserve fair representaton ? Their rights, salaries and benefits continue to either decline or stagnate at levels which do not keep up with the increasing costs of living. I sense that you have a problem with the teachers. Try walking in their shoes. It is a difficult and demanding job. They do not just show up and teach. There is a massive amount of prep work involved in this career.
I still , however, am chuckling at your comparison of Cunnaminson schools to Newark and Camden. Why not have some pride and compare them to Moorestown, Eastern, cherry Hill east. Or should our high schools appearance support a poverty complex in the face of a high tax burden. How in the world do you expect our schools to cut costs any further. The most important part if any community is the school system.
Ric November 8, 2012 at 02:04 am
Hy. There is not a word of truth in what you claim. First off, be honest about who you are: Obviously you are a teacher otherwise you would not claim teachers could not be paid less. And that explains why you are overjoyed you got a Philly union teacher sitting on our board of education. You guys plan to tax the Cunnaminson [sic] (as you spelled it) taxpayers dry.
By the way, you sling it so much that you forgot you said, "I can easily sat [sic] that Cinnaminson High is one of the ugliest, most decrepit schools in New Jersey. That is why I mentioned Camden, Jersey City et al. Listen, your thoughts and spelling are way off. Perhaps you are drinking too many of beer chasers like a good Philly union member. Just be glad you got a buddy on Cinnaminson’s school board that can well reward you union guys. I would be disappointed if you guys do not find lots of ways to reward her for loyal service after she completes her term. I also wonder what having her on the school board will cost us taxpayers. It already cost us the two candidates who dropped out. Wonder why.
Hy Lit November 8, 2012 at 02:29 am
Ric. I am not a teacher. However, I do believe they are grossly underpaid given the responsibility which encompasses their profession. It is a huge burden to he shape the minds of future American citizens.
And are we going to be trivial and point out typographical errors in order to reinforce our otherwise shallow opinions, Ric. You made several errors in your comments and I gave you the benefit of the doubt and assumed they were typos. I simply do not make spelling errors. Furthermore, I do not drink beer and rarely drink anything alcoholic. So my thoughts and opinions are crystal clear and people with common sense know the value of our educational system. I am also by no means a union member. I am self employed and have no vested interest in the field of education. I simply appreciate the importance . I also just feel that our kids deserve a nice place to go to school. We pay enough in taxes to insure this. I , for one, would have no problem paying more in taxes to ensure that our future is taken care of. And deep down, you know that all of my opinions are correct here. You just want to scuffle with words and stir the pot.
Ric November 8, 2012 at 02:49 am
LOL! And I am not a Cinnaminson taxpayer if you are neither a teacher nor somehow connected to the union or administration. Please, do not even claim you are just a taxpayer. No taxpayer would ever say tax me more - well at least not a sane taxpayer. You are welcome to be honest. Give credibility to your words.
By the way, you have said nothing that shows to me how Fitzwater, a part time teacher at a big city Community College, is qualified to be on our small town school board. The challenges Philadelphia students face are not the same as the challenges Cinnaminson students face. For example, our streets are not scarred by drug turf wars.
Hy Lit November 8, 2012 at 03:33 am
Honestly Ric. I am just a taxpayer. I am generous with my money when it goes to the greater good. I really would have no problem paying more taxes if it would help with our educational system . How would you like me to give credibility to my words? I am just being honest.
Being on the school board does not require advanced educational degrees. It is group of people with varying backgrounds that function closely with the superintendent of schools to try to ensure that our school system functions efficiently and with the good of the students as a first priority. Mrs. Fitzwater has an educational background. However, she is also a regular citizen who has children who attend our schools, Furthermore, she was elected to the position and deserves the opportunity to do her best before we display our cynicism in her direction. Just give her a chance and she may surprise you. I am sure there have been " under qualified" Cinnaminson school board members in the past. And I am also sure that some of these people have done an adequate job. And I do not think that at the community college level Mrs.Fitzwater has spent a significant amount of her time dealing with drug turf wars. Lets give her a chance and see how she fares.
Ric November 8, 2012 at 03:48 am
Whatever - honestly there is no honesty to you or Fitzwater. She hid her union affiliation. What else is she hiding? You have only proven Laura is the wrong person for the job.
So what you are saying is: union member Laura’s qualifications are light but we are a small town, so even an idiot would be perfect on our school board. But Laura is not even a full time teacher. She is not much more than a substitute teacher. Sorry the school budget runs into many millions. I do not think the average soccer mom or soccer dad is up to negotiating a union contract. And you run from the fact that she is a union member who will negotiate a union contract for taxpayers. Talk about the fox guarding the chicken house. Honestly, I am getting bored with your lies and half-truths. Disclose your connection. Perhaps you are Laura or Geri? Anyway, since you cannot be honest, adios.
Hy Lit November 8, 2012 at 12:16 pm
Believe it or not , I have no agenda whatsoever. I call them like I see them. You are judging this woman before she has begun day 1 of her position. And as I said previously, there are no specific qualifications required of a school board member. They represent all walks of life. This is the system which has been set up and of which me must abide. Again, just give her a chance. I am not dispelling lies. I am just in favor of giving Laura the benefit of delving into her job before judgement. If you care to do your research, which obviously you have not, you will see that throughout the state there are thousand of school board members who are either more or less qualified for the position. Your agenda is clearly anti-teacher due to the fact that they have union representation. I am not a member of any union and have no special interest here. In fact, you would be very surprised at what my profession is. However, I am certainly not skeptical just for the sake of being a skeptic.
Bowtie November 8, 2012 at 12:31 pm
Wow. This is way too much drama. Fighter 1 is a concerned parent with kids currently in the Cinnaminson school system who appear wants to do whatever has to get done to make it a better school system for not only their but all children. Fighter 2 obviously has no children currently in the school at this time. School taxes/budget also affect the property values and support the quality of our educational system. This in turn attracts the type of caring residents that Cinnaminson desires and needs. Quality of schools=quality of residents.. Hence Newark,Camden,Jersey City. You get what you pay for. I vote to pass logical school budgets so Cinnaminson does not end up like the afformentioned cities. I am not a teacher.... tbh... Sory for any typos..my phone has little keys and I have fat fingers... Go Pirates!
Ric November 8, 2012 at 04:51 pm
The bottom line: I am sure the Cinnaminson teacher's union is very excited that Fitzwater, a center city Philly teacher's union member is on our small town school board. Let’s be honest - how could she ever dare say no to fellow union member in Cinnaminson and remain in good standing with her big city union buddies. The truth of why two other candidates dropped out is mysterious. We will never know the truth. But then I do not understand big city union politics. It just plain smells.
Zuzu November 8, 2012 at 06:12 pm
I am a Cinnaminson tax payer with a school aged child. The average teachers earns in the high 5 range so they do get paid well. As far as Hylit's opninion about their benefits being cut. The benefits have been over the top for years. They're just starting to come in line with what the rest of us have to live with so I have no pity for them. It's a noble profession and one that I wouldn't attempt so I have a deep respect for teachers. That doesn't mean we have to give them the keys to the kingdom in pay and benefits. As far as the school appear goes. That should be a secondary concern over the mediocre tests scores that CHS produces. Instead of bleeding residents for more money how about filtering the money that they get to the classrooms where it will do the most good. I would happily pay taxes to support the school if they properly managed what they already have.
Hy Lit November 8, 2012 at 07:49 pm
The teachers salaries are not reasonable . That is why they deserve a benefit package that is better than average. I love when people think teachers make too much money. And scores on testing have a lot to do with parenting as well. Cinnaminson has sent kids to Harvard, Princeton and MIT. Not much better than that. And yes, money should go to academic things first. But the school is straight up ugly. Don't our kids deserve better.
Hy Lit November 8, 2012 at 07:52 pm
Properly manage the money. What do you think they are having a party with all the money they don't get every time a budget does not pass. Another anti-education citizen.
Ric November 8, 2012 at 08:45 pm
Hy, Manup. Now you claim that you are an expert on:
1. teacher's salaries & benefits, 2. the colleges that Cinnaminson kids go to 3 3. Fitzwater's union credential and part time teaching status 4. the teacher’s unions 5. School funding 6. The condition of the schools And then you try to claim you are not connected to the school system. Tell me this, before you got your job with the schools (or your partner) did you sell used cars? You are so full of it .Your eyes must be dark brown. Manup, stop hiding. Are you that ashamed of who you are? Maybe an expert like you will explain why the two others dropped? That smells real fishy, don't it?
Hy Lit November 8, 2012 at 10:25 pm
Ric . You are attacking me personally.I have not said that I am an expert on anything. I am giving my unbiased opinion on the situation. Your agenda is anti - teacher and I have succeeded in bringing that out. So my comments have had a purpose . Just give Mrs. Fitzwater the opportunity that you would give any newly elected official.
Ric November 8, 2012 at 11:28 pm
Hy, I know exactly who you are. Grow up and act in accordance with your high position in the community.
As far as your buddy, I trust Fitzwater as much as I trust any big city union member with her hands on our tax money – which is just as much as I trust the CSA. She is not qualified to be on the school board. She is not even a full time teacher. For some reason that she is on the board while others stepped down – and that smells. Just like why the republicans run with no opposition. Just smells so fishy, ya know? Makes me wonder, does Cinnaminson have its own machine boss? What do you think?

Ric - what is the CSA? How many of our current school board members are teachers? Is that a pre-requisite in your mind? You said, "She is not qualified to be on the school board. She is not even a full time teacher."
I think you are having a meltdown, Ric. Time to step away from the keyboard and take a breather.
Ric November 9, 2012 at 02:45 am
AnnoninCinna. I apologize, if you think you and I would share dialog. Have a good evening and sleep it off. You had too many again.

We were totally disappointed at the Palmyra Council Meeting last night. The ordinance requiring theRead More Inspection, Registration, and Licensing of Residential Rental Properties was opposed by many concerned citizens. Concerns were stated and questions asked, but few were answered or addressed! I still do not know if the NJ State code supercedes this ordinance, since no one addressed my concerns. The legality of this ordinance was questioned and it was mentioned that similar laws have been challenged in other towns and invalidated by the NJ courts. Why did the council not form a committee with those landlords that expressed a willingness to work together to come to an acceptable compromise and passage of an ordinance that is legal and for the good of all of Palmya?
Mystery Diner June 18, 2013 at 10:11 pm
I actually agree with most of what you say. If they face a court challenge and lose, they are dumberRead More than I thought. My point is that something has to be done. I feel that inaction is unacceptable. I literally have neighbors moving/trying to move because of 1 or 2 rental properties. Garbage on the lawn. Garbage in the street. Lawn only gets cut twice a year. Broken glass in the street. Multiple cars taking up space in front of homeowner's homes. Junk cars leaking oil in the streets. Broken porches, railings and windows. The drugs. The drugs. They should enforce current codes! The police should do their jobs. I hope that these new rules don't hurt innocent people, but some landlords have shown that they don't give a damn about the community that their "investments" are in.
Phyllis Blackeby June 18, 2013 at 10:26 pm
I only wish that they would use the laws on the books. If 800 violations have been written sinceRead More April, then why do they need to pass this ordinance and have excessive fees and hurt me the small landlord who just spent over $7,000 fixing up my apartment. Palmyra has a large budget deficit, is this ordinance how the Council hopes to remedy the budget problem- $125. at a time?

This is great, we send our kids to school to read write and do math and yet when they have to putRead More things down for writing something for a college admissions we have to send them to professionals for help....So in esscence we are wasting our tax money and just providing teachers with a salary....No wonder the USA is in trouble...If its not on an I phone we cannot do it....Food for thought....
