Cinnaminson Boys' Soccer Looking to Build on Strong 2010 Season

A 12-5-2 record in 2010 and an appearance in the state tournament gives the Pirates hopes for a successful 2011 campaign.

Entering his 16th season at the helm of the boys’ soccer team, head coach Bill Dent knows this season will be a learning experience for most of the players on his roster. The team has a lot of youth this year with the graduation of six seniors.

“A lot of people say you’re rebuilding," Dent said. "A lot of people say you’re reloading. I say we’re reconfiguring. It’s going to take awhile to make adjustments. I think it’s very important that we have some success early to make the kids believe in what we’re doing. That chemistry and cohesiveness that comes from winning helps build a lot of things.”

The 2010 season saw the compile a 12-5-2 record, advancing to the sectional quarterfinal of the state tournament, falling to Woodstown 2-1 to end the season. Despite the loss of all those seniors from the 2010 team, the Pirates hope the playoff experience will help them on the field in 2011.

“We are very young and inexperienced but hopefully as the season goes on we will get better with hard work and desire. Our biggest problem right now is getting that same work ethic in practice to carry over to the game,” Dent said.

As with most of the other teams from Cinnaminson, when asked about local rivalries, the Pirates claim that Delran and Holy Cross bring about the most competitive and entertaining games whether playing home or away.

“Delran for sure because it’s always a big game either here or at the Bears’ Den. The environment, before we even get there, we know when we play Delran that it’s going to be a physical game. We know we have to step up,” back Justin Redziniak said.

The team captains, Redziniak and midfielder Timothy Kemmerle, are making sure that everyone on the roster plays together as a team, takes responsibility for their duties on the field, and works hard in practice each day.

Cinnaminson has a tough schedule to play within the Liberty Division, where the team came away with a 5-3-1 record in 2010, with games against Delran, Moorestown, Rancocas Valley, Burlington Township and Northern Burlington.

The Pirates will be forced to try different lineups on the fly with each game in order to find that combination of players that leads the team to success in 2011.

“I ask two things of the kids: to work hard every day and constantly improve,” Dent said.

Cinnaminson lost its first two games of the season to Moorestown and to Holy Cross by a combined score of 4-1. The Pirates travel to Delran for a divisional game against the Bears on Thursday.
