Cinnaminson Captures RVL Crown

The township defeats Vincentown 13-3 behind the strong pitching of Nick Melchiorre to capture their second title in three years.

Cinnaminson baseball defeated Vincentown 13-3 Tuesday night at Southampton Memorial Park in game four of the Rancocas Valley League finals, becoming the league champion for the second time in three years.

Nick Melchiorre recorded the win in six strong innings. He permitted eight hits, hit one batter, walked one and allowed only two unearned runs. This performance came three games after Melchiorre threw a one-hitter in game one of the finals that was riddled with eight walks and one hit batter.

“He [Melchiorre] was great for us last night. The first game he allowed only one hit but walked a ton of batters. Last night he was around the plate, allowed only one walk, and pitched a lot tougher once guys got on base,” Cinnaminson Manager Brett Miller said.

Cinnaminson put up a four-run second inning that propelled them to their 13-3 title-clinching victory. Cinnaminson’s Dennis O’Hanlan hit a ground ball that should have been a routine double play, but instead, O’Hanlan beat out the throw to first and kept the inning alive.

“We put really good swings on some balls last night. We made their guy throw strikes and we swung at good pitches. He deserved better than what occurred because his defense really let him down,” Miller said.

Kevin Carty took the loss for Vincentown, allowing all 13 runs in a complete game effort.

“We knew going into the series that we had a deeper pitching staff than them and we figured it would be the difference and it wound up being true,” Miller said.

The Cinnaminson offense outscored the Vincentown offense by a final tally of 34-19 in the four games. Cinnaminson led Vincentown from the second inning and it was 7-0 when Vincentown scratched across two unearned runs.

“Everyone in our lineup contributed one through nine in the order. I think we had one guy who didn’t get a hit last night. Joe Sirroli went 3-4 but he has been big for us all year. Almost everyone contributed one through nine. When you score 13 runs, that’s usually the case,” Miller said.

Cinnaminson staff ace Ryan Varga was named the Regular Season/Playoff MVP with a record of 10-1, two saves, and an ERA of 0.66.

“We wouldn’t have made it as far as we did without Varga on our staff. He led this team with his 10 wins and he added a couple of saves as well,” Miller said.
