Public schools in New Jersey compete for sectional championships in five classification groups, with V being the largest classification and I being the smallest. Sections include two in the north, one in the south and one central region.

The Pirates were in Group II last year, as well, but were placed in the South Jersey region. It is common for teams to switch back and forth between South and Central groupings in a given season, based on the number of schools in the enrollment class for the given year.
