Seven Phillipsburg High School wrestlers involved in a controversial photo have been scratched from the individual state wrestling tournament, nj.com reports.

The seven wrestlers, all white, were seen posing with a black tackling dummy dressed in a Paulsboro shirt with a noose around his neck in a photo that began circulating over the weekend.

On Wednesday, Phillipsburg School District Superintendent George Chando told nj.com action has been taken, but didn’t reveal what the action was at that time.

On Thursday, nj.com reported the seven wrestlers were scratched from the District 1 individual wrestling tournament, which commences this weekend. Wrestlers advance from the district tournament to the regional tournament and ultimately the state tournament, meaning the seven wrestlers in question will not have an opportunity to win a state championship this season.

Phillipsburg and Paulsboro boast powerhouse wrestling programs and are traditional opponents.

The teams wrestled earlier this season. Phillipsburg won the match, 38-21, according to nj.com.

Pundit, please understand that the image of a dummy, particularly a black dummy, resonates in a very negative way regardless of intent. The fact that the 2 kids wore pointed hoods also made it clear that this was no coincidence. Yes the dummy did not have a face or a skin color, however this image of a lynching is a very disturbing image that is unacceptable in society today. We have no right to tell a minority group what is and is not offensive, especially when it is clear what this picture was portraying.
