Dog Park Supporters Moving Forward

If fundraising efforts go as planned, dog lovers could see a park for their four-legged friends next year.

After the first meeting for those interested in supporting a dog park in Cinnaminson, the ideas started flowing. But, Kim Kelly, who organized the meeting, is feeling a bit overwhelmed.

“I’ve never done anything like this before,” said Kelly, who’s a teacher in the district.

Then again, no one in Cinnaminson has.

About a dozen dog lovers showed up last week at the community center to talk location, amenities and finances for a proposed dog park in Cinnaminson.

Deputy Mayor Don Brauckmann, also the director of parks and recreation, said a few of the township’s seven parks have the space, but the ideal location is Wood Park, since it’s in the center of town.

But, right now, the group is looking at a spot near the utility building off the Lenola Road entrance of Memorial Park. There’s already a fence on three sides, Brauckmann said, so only one side would be needed.

Receptacles, running water, mulch and stationary toys were also discussed.

“This needs to be self-generated through fundraising,” Brauckmann said.

The group plans to apply for nonprofit status, and reach out to local residents and business owners for ideas and help with the project.

The group estimates about $30,000 to start the park, with maintenance by public works, with no extra cost to the taxpayer.

The group decided to start a steering committee.

“We need to identify steps we need to take,” said Kim Mauroff, another supporter, who’s also the president of the home and school association for New Albany and Rush.

And, it’s definitely not too late to help with the efforts—e-mail Kelly at cinnadogpark@hotmail.com or visit the Facebook page here. A second meeting will be scheduled soon.
